Polyphasic Sleep Log – Day 1 I’ve completed my first day on the polyphasic sleep schedule, napping for 20-30 minutes every four hours. It’s been almost 36 hours since I last awoke from a full night’s sleep. “Day” is a relative term on this schedule, since the daytime sleeping schedule is no different than the nighttime one. No serious problems thus far aside from some fatigue, lower concentration, and occasional sleepiness. Yesterday seemed tougher than it should have been, as I experienced some tiredness even though I was initially getting more sleep than usual by beginning the nap schedule after having a regular night’s sleep. Last night was semi-difficult, with lots of sleepiness and fatigue between the 1am and 5am naps. 5am was my normal waking time. Things became easier once I made it past the 9am nap, and I felt alert enough to pump out a podcast. I’ve received some advice-filled emails from people who’ve previously tried polyphasic sleep.

My Rules for Consistent Happiness I work at a newspaper, I'm at home at 2 am or even later. I also have a second job. yeah, I guess its good advice, but not realistic. Are you really sure there isn't a decision point in there? I have a pretty full life too, but rarely can I imagine a situation where I didn't have a choice to disengage at 9:30p if I so chose. I am sure most people have the choice, but they would have to give up other things or let people down. Some things are not by choice - if you have a child who is crying and cannot sleep at 2200, it would mess up your perfect schedule. Or even if you include fun things that you would absolutely miss, like seeing the fireworks at the ballpark on 4th of July because they occur after the game has concluded, usually around 2200-2300. Just think about people like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin, Martin Luther King Jr., Albert Einstein, Barack Obama and whoever else you can think of. Everyone has the same amount of time every single day.

Alternative Sleep Cycles: You Don't Really Need 6-8 Hours! Most people only think that there is one way to sleep: Go to sleep at night for 6-8 hours, wake up in the morning, stay awake for 16-18 hours and then repeat. Actually, that is called a monophasic sleep cycle, which is only 1 of 5 major sleep cycles that have been used successfully throughout history. The other 4 are considered polyphasic sleep cycles due to the multiple number of naps they require each day. How is this possible? How is this healthy? Well the most important of every sleep cycle is the Stage 4 REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, which has been shown to provide the benefits of sleep to the brain above all other stages of sleep. This way, you still get the benefits of 8 hours of sleep without wasting all of the time it takes to get to REM cycles, resulting in a much more efficient sleep cycle. Uberman Cycle: 20 to 30 minute naps every 4 hours, resulting in 6 naps each day. Everyman Cycle: One longer “core” nap that is supplemented with several 20-30 minute naps. Dymaxion Cycle:

Startups, life, learning and happiness 21 Habits of Happy People “Happiness is a habit – cultivate it.” ~ Elbert Hubbard Happiness is one aspiration all people share. No one wants to be sad and depressed. We’ve all seen people who are always happy – even amidst agonizing life trials. I’m not saying happy people don’t feel grief, sorrow or sadness; they just don’t let it overtake their life. The following are 21 things happy people make a habit of doing: 1. Be thankful that you woke up alive each morning. 2. Surround yourself with happy, positive people who share your values and goals. Accept others for who they are as well as where they are in life. 4. Keep up to date with the latest news regarding your career and hobbies. 5. Don’t wallow in self-pity. 6. Some statistics show that 80% of people dislike their jobs! 7. Take the time to see the beauty around you. 8. Don’t take yourself – or life to seriously. 9. Holding a grudge will hurt no one but you. 10. Develop an attitude of gratitude. 11. 12. Honesty is the best policy. 13. 14. 15. 16. 17. 18. 19.

ENFP Profile Extraverted iNtuitive Feeling Perceiving by Marina Margaret Heiss Profile: ENFP Revision: 4.0 Date of Revision: 28 Feb 2011 [The following comes partially from the archetype, but mostly from my own dealings with ENFPs.] ENFPs are both "idea"-people and "people"-people, who see everyone and everything as part of a cosmic whole. ENFPs often have strong, if sometimes surprising, values and viewpoints. ENFPs can be the warmest, kindest, and most sympathetic of mates; affectionate, demonstrative, and spontaneous. For some ENFPs, relationships can be seriously tested by their short attention spans and emotional needs. In the workplace, ENFPs are pleasant and friendly, and interact in a positive and creative manner with both their co-workers and the public. Extraverted iNtuitive Feeling Perceiving by Joe Butt ENFPs are friendly folks. ENFPs have what some call a "silly switch." One study has shown that ENFPs are significantly overrepresented in psychodrama. ENFPs are global learners. Famous ENFPs:

Hakula: Learn the Natural State of 'Fearlessness' The Natural Fear-Free State of Calm… Hakula, is the natural state of optimal human performance. It is the opposite of the tunnel-vision-fear state many have experienced, because it creates a feeling of calm, and enables the greatest perspective and flexibility of behavior and response. It is so powerful it is one of the key tools we teach our one-on-one clients in our VIP program. How to Practice HakulaPick a spot on the wall, somewhere higher than eye level, around the center of your field of vision. (This state of focus-with-peripheral-awareness was named ‘Hakula’ by the ancient people of Hawaii). When to use Hakula Hakula is perfect for the kinds of situations in which you used to experience fear because it shifts the mind into a state where it is ‘contextually all-aware’. Typically with our clients, we find that if clients think about a problem, then shift into Hakula, the problem immediately seems trivial.

Recap: Apple announces the iPad Mini at $329, fourth gen iPad, new Macs Today was a big day for Apple and the team from Cupertino did not disappoint. In addition to the iPad mini, the company announced a fourth generation iPad, an incredibly thin iMac, a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, and a Mac mini speed bump. The new products were just one part though, as the company had lots of big numbers to run through and an incredible amount of success throughout this year to celebrate about. As always, we were treated to a few minutes of updates about how Apple is doing before every Apple event really gets started. Today, Tim Cook cook came out on stage, and started off with iPhone 5 and iOS 6. Next, Cook gave some stats from iCloud and app usage. 125 million documents are stored in iCloud in the last year. 300 billion messages are sent through iMessage — that is 28,000 messages per second. Interestingly, Apple focused heavily on iBooks at this event. The Mac platform continues to outgrow Windows-based personal computers for six years straight now.
