"I have 5,000 friends on Facebook," says the Swedish-born entrepreneur, who lives in Singapore, but was about to board a flight from Barcelona to Germany, and then to Dubai, when we spoke by phone. "I could have had 10,000, but Mark Zuckerberg only lets me have five. Staël von Holstein is launching a Facebook competitor out of Singapore called MyCube; it's currently in private beta. I just signed up on the site, and as a result was given 5,000 free "Cubes," a virtual currency on the site worth a total of 50 Singapore dollars, or about $40 American. The difficulty of finding the right word for the way people stand in relation to one another underscores the difficulty MyCube faces. Staël von Holstein points out that you can choose to give away any content for free, if you wish. For any financial transactions on the site, 70% goes to the content generator, 30% goes to MyCube. Movim - The kick-ass social network BO.LT | Social Page Sharing Facebook holds off on controversial address and phone sharing feature Facebook announced a few days ago that it would offer developers access to users’ address and phone number information. Not surprisingly, that’s sparked a bit of an uproar. Now, according to Facebook’s director of developer relations Douglas Purdy, the company is putting the feature on hold as it works to make the process clearer to users. Honestly, I’m surprised Facebook didn’t see this coming. Either the company was blind to the potential for user uproar, or it figured it could sneak in the feature without users noticing. Purdy points out that users have to explicitly choose to share their personal information with third parties, and they can always see what information they’re sharing via Facebook’s Application Dashboard. Over the weekend, we got some useful feedback that we could make people more clearly aware of when they are granting access to this data. Trapit Twitter Exploit Warning: How Anyone Can Easily Snatch Your Direct Messages - Search Engine Watch (SEW) Worries about application access have been floating in the Twitter streams of late. Many have voiced concerns about privacy breaches by applications that log users in to Twitter or access their account. Turns out, those fears are well founded. Using WordPress to Access Direct Messages For the sake of simplicity, I'm using WordPress to demonstrate accessing Direct Message information. The Twitter API allows developers access to lots of neat information. Before we go further, apologies to Shannon Whitley for butchering your WordPress plug-in (Twit Connect) and making an example of it. Once you install the plug-in, 90 percent of the work is done. click to enlarge Retrieving Messages The next step is to look into the Twitter API for Direct Message access. From this we can see a number of options here, we have a number of output return options and options for limiting the number of messages retrieved. Here looks about as good as any spot. Done!
And The Winner Of TechCrunch Disrupt NYC Is…Getaround! Three days and 32 startup pitches later, the winner of TechCrunch Disrupt has been determined. Out of the 30 startups and two audience choice winners, we whittled the list down to six finalists, which include Billguard, ccLoop, Do@, Getaround, InvoiceASAP, and Sonar. Without further ado, the two runners-up are Billguard and Sonar (that’s the first time we’ve had two runners-up). And the winner is….Getaround! Watch Getaround win the cup at the award presentation: Here’s what Getaround told us backstage after they won the cup. Getaround is a car rental market place where you can rent a car by the day, hour or week through a smartphone app. Getaround was a hit with the judges when the startup pitched the idea on Tuesday; with most of the judges wishing they could have invested in the company. In addition to a $50,000 grand prize, the company has just been handed the Disrupt Cup, taking over possession from Disrupt San Francisco winner Qwiki. Content Choreography The concept of permanently placing content on a web page for a single browsing width or resolution is becoming a thing of the past. Media-queried responsive & adaptive sites afford us the ability to re-architect content on a page to fit its container, but with this exciting new potential come equally exciting challenges. Web designers will have to look beyond the layout in front of them to envision how its elements will reflow & lockup at various widths while maintaining form & hierarchy. Media queries can be used to do more than patch broken layouts: with proper planning, we can begin to choreograph content proportional to screen size, serving the best possible experience at any width. As I step into my 3rd responsive project with Paravel, I’ve made a habit out of picking apart media-queried sites I happen across, noting how things get rearranged at various widths. Content Stacking This is unavoidable. The Content Change-up De-compartmentalize the Workflow
