Nevertheless, many remain blissfully unaware of this truth due to the fact that ecosystem thresholds are not always marked with warning signs of impending danger. Unfortunately, this means that we may actually pass through a tipping point unaware because it is quite possible that nothing significant will happen at first.
Le potager urbain: La Butineuse de Vanier Оver the last decade, ponds have gained popularity as an important component of gardens, and this has led to a higher demand for new, effective techniques for maintenance of ponds. Since ponds are expensive to construct, prolonging their life is very economical. Оne simple and effective way of doing this is through installing pond aerators. Pond aeration simply involves adding oxygen to the water in your pond. Maintaining sufficient amounts of dissolved oxygen ─ a very important parameter of water quality ─ in your pond helps in breaking down of decaying vegetation and other substances that provide nutrients . This process is usually carried out by microbes found either at the water or soil interface and proceeds several centimeters deep into the soil.
(Wild) Beasts of Marginality and Southern Imaginaries – Arts in a Changing America I’ve always been bothered by the ways in which marginality (especially the kind that fuses gender and color) is represented in works of art. In fact, the whole notion of “representation” I have always found problematic and at the same time intriguing. I am a folklorist/anthropologist; my profession thrives on telling other people’s stories —that is, representing other’s realities or, as it has often been the case historically, also mis-representing and acting as “the voice” of the folk whom one presumes are too busy, or occupied, or dumb, or unskilled to represent themselves. Earth Blog: EARTH MEANDERS: Ecocide Is Not Development; Love and Ecology Are the Answer Earth's ecosystems are collapsing, human and all species' habitats are being lost, and our one shared biosphere is failing and dying. Love of other peoples and species and of nature, truth, justice, and equity are the only lasting basis for global ecological sustainability. “It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.” – Krishnamurti “Truth matters. Freedom matters. Justice matters.
PROJECT STORY How to supply cities with fresh products while limiting transportation? Is there any available and non-polluted land left for farming? Thanks to new growth-related technology like aquaponics and micro-methanation, very good yields can be obtained on a very small area, and still be environmentally friendly (organic produce and energy efficient). Housed on the roof of a container, the greenhouse is protected from urban areas.
Police Storm Park in Istanbul, Setting Off a Night of Chaos As protesters fled the tear gas and water cannons, the police pursued them, in one case into a luxury hotel near the park where medics tended to people injured in the raid. Within hours, thousands of people began streaming downtown to protest the crackdown, setting bonfires on the city’s main boulevard as tear gas wafted through streets normally bustling on a Saturday night. Local officials said at least 44 people had been injured in the mayhem — the worst since the protests began — but their counts are often low. Some people sprawled on the floor of a makeshift clinic in a hotel ballroom complained of burns from chemicals in the jets of water shot from the water cannons.
Economists forecast the end of growth The last few weeks has seen bad news for the global economy, with the US and Europe facing growth slowdowns, and even much vaunted economic powerhouses Brazil, Russia, India and China faltering unexpectedly. While mainstream economists continue to predict an ongoing 'recovery', other leading experts point to the end of growth as we know it for the foreseeable future. Earlier this month, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) slashed its quarterly forecasts for global GDP growth from 3.3% to 3.1%, and revised down growth estimates for other major powers. The US forecast was downgraded from 1.9% to 1.7%, and Europe is expected to contract 0.6% rather than the originally estimated 0.3%.
Taking Space to Grow Food and Community: Urban Agriculture and Guerrilla Gardening in Vancouver When I moved back to my hometown of Vancouver in April 2006, I decided I wanted to live on the West Side. This area appealed to me in part because of its many green spaces, including community gardens. I really hoped that I could find a place where I could grow some of my own food. Once I began to explore the possibilities, I realized that there was little hope of getting a plot in one of the nearby community gardens: the waiting lists were incredibly long.
