IN A RUSH? FORGET THE BRUSH! - thebeautydepartment.com photos: Angela Kohler + thebeautydepartment.com post designed by kristin ess In a world where we can’t stop running late, the fun bun is probably the quickest way from A to Chic. This look comes in über-handy when you wake up late and you’re rushing out the door (or even if you have plenty of time). It’s such a high-brow/low-brow look. Step 1: If your hair is straight, use a 1″ curling iron to curl everything under. Step 2: Flip your hair over and gather everything into a ponytail on top of you head, securing it with an elastic ponytail holder. Step 3: On the last time around with the ponytail holder, only pull the ponytail through half way. Step 4: Take the loop you’ve created and spread it out. Step 5: Take the tail end and wrap it around the ponytail base. Step 6: Pin the end of the ponytail to the base using a couple of hair pins/bobby pins. Step 7: Gently pull on pieces and then pin them. Step 8: Spray a veil of medium hold hairspray all over. Enjoy the fun bun! XX Kristin Ess

Thankfully, there are lots of easy yet creative ways to keep your necklaces organized and tangle free. Why hide your pretty pearls away in a jewelry box when they should be seen? The solution? An Easy DIY Lipstick Palette August 28th, 200822 Comments Have too many lipsticks and want a better option to carry them around? Jenbabae from the Makeup Alley forums has an easy do-it-yourself lipstick palette you can do at home. All you need is your favorite lip balms or lipsticks, a palette with however many wells you would like (you can find some great empty palettes at Japonesque), 1 teaspoon stainless steel measuring spoon, floss and flame. With that, you can achieve this: Cute right? The first step is to take the product you’ll be adding to the palette and use floss to slice through it as shown. It will soon look like this. Hair Tutorial: The Perfect Mermaid Curls Although “perfect” is a relative term, this method for curling hair is pretty much perfect by my standards, mostly because it isn’t fussy. While I’m a sucker for both ringlets and Californian waves, I like my own curls somewhere in between: relaxed but bouncy. Mermaid-like. Supplies: 1″ curling iron, brush, and hair sprayTime: 45 minutes (for thick hair) All of the magic happens with Revlon’s “Helen of Troy” ceramic 1″ curling iron. For those who have long, thick hair like me, you might find that larger curling barrels produce the most pathetic excuse for “waves” that fall out within the hour, regardless of the amount of hair spray. I’ve found that the 1″ barrel creates tight waves that look good for at least 5-6 hours (though they do relax over time). For hairspray, I’m a fan of Tigi’s Hard Head, which has a strong hold without the severe crunchiness. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Repeat this around your entire head. Don’t get lazy with the back of your head! Et voilà!
