Photograph: Royalty-Free/Corbis Even though my office is in Rugby, which is just about as far from the sea as you get, I work in marine power. The job is a great fit for me. I was inspired to get into renewables and engineering back in my early teens, largely thanks to my grandfather. My job covers all sorts of things. Wave energy forces change dramatically over just a few seconds, so the power generated can vary hugely depending on whether it's pleasant sailing weather or stormy. There are many other challenges to overcome, not least obtaining long-term government support for the development of innovative technologies. There aren't large numbers of women in engineering, so people often ask me about the pros and cons of working as an engineer if you're female.
