Building an automatic chicken waterer | Farm Folly
Before we left on our recent road trip, we wanted to have a system in place to water the chickens so the neighbor who would be collecting the eggs wouldn’t have to deal with our problematic hanging waterers. I’d been planning such a system for some time. All I can say is, “We should have done this sooner!” First, I built a stand for the water tank. The new waterer would be gravity fed, so I needed a bit of elevation. We might also want to mount the waterer inside the coop, so the tank stand needed to be high enough to feed into the coop, but low enough that we could collect rainwater off the coop roof (ala pile of o’melays). The water tank was another recycled food-grade 55 gal drum. The waterer itself is a Little Giant Automatic Bird Fount . C.R.A.P. The rail-mounted design of the new waterer matches the rail-mounted chicken feeder I previously built. Edit: Robin tells me my drawing is unclear and needs some explanation.
Preparedness - Homegrown Medicinals
While I’m out working in the garden, I’m not just tending standard food crops, I’m also tending herbs and “weeds”. Some I use for culinary purposes, some for medicinal, some for both. (Don’t you love it when you can get multiple uses from one item?) With many medicinal herbs now being outlawed in Europe, and increasing odds that the US is likely to follow Europe’s lead (thank you, Big Pharma), I’ve been learning more about plants that I can grow in my own yard for medicinal purposes. I dry an assortment of plants over the course of the season. Here’s a shot of the naked jars. From left to right we have chocolate mint, mullein blossoms, lemon balm, red clover blossoms, yarrow, catnip, chamomile, raspberry leaf, hyssop, and mullein leaves. The mints (chocolate mint, lemon balm, catnip) make lovely teas. Mullein is used externally for treating ear ailments, and internally for treating congestion. Chamomile is a general relaxant. It seems like forever ago since I last talked about compost worms without giving them away. I‘ve been long overdue to curl up on the couch (well, actually my desk chair), a latte within reach, and tap away on my keyboard about these amazing little creatures. If you’re a worm farm newbie maybe you’ve entertained a thought something like this: “I have a large container in my kitchen FULL of worms and worm pooh. The whole point of keeping a compost worm bin is to end up with worm castings (or manure) and composted organic matter to use in your garden. Harvesting worm castings is the act of separating the worms from the composted bedding and worm castings. WHEN is the worm bin ready to harvest? As far as how long it takes to get to this point, it depends. Think of it like this.
