10 of the Best Drug Store Beauty Buys

10 of the Best Drug Store Beauty Buys
I have an apology to make: I used to be one of those girls behind the makeup counter of a big, fancy department store selling you over-priced beauty products. While I won’t say which brand I worked for, I can tell you that my uniform consisted of all black and way too much makeup. Hey, it was the 90’s, after all. Well, I’m here to make amends. Because, you see, not all department store makeup is better than the drug store version. The beauty industry is full of people pushing products that they don’t stand behind 100%. Also, celebrities rarely endorse products because, like the rest of us, they aren’t always picture perfect and no cosmetic company wants to be represented by someone who actually looks like the rest of us common folk. So, to make up for the error in my ways, I am sharing ten of my all-time favorite drug store beauty buys with you. (Part 2 of this series can be seen here: 10 More of the Best Drug Store Beauty Buys) L’Oréal Volumnious Mascara in Carbon Black

Eyeliner Week: Lining the Waterline « Painted Ladies By Sheila Yes, it’s true, we have an official theme to this week here at Painted Ladies. Due to a couple of reader emails, I’ve been busy behind the scenes with some eyeliner-related tutorials. What better way to show them to you than by declaring this week an homage to the subject? First on the lineup is all about lining the waterline of your eyes, that pink area right below your lashes on the top and bottom. Lining the waterline is often confused with tightlining, which is another technique that we’ll discuss tomorrow. You can use whatever manner of liner you feel most comfortable with. Another option is powder eyeshadow. So, here I am before any kind of makeup, naked for all the world to see! The technique is simple, but will take some getting used to if you’re ticklish or sensitive, which pretty much everyone should be – after all, we’re about to nearly stick an object in our eyes! And the end results? Not half bad, eh? Do you have any tricks or product suggestions to add to the mix?

Should I Wax at Home or Leave it to Professionals? Beauty expert Alexis Wolfer, founder of TheBeautyBean.com, recommends at-home waxers start with their legs: "You can see what you're doing best and the risk of screwing it up is minimal at most." DIY - MAKE YOUR OWN WAX FOR HAIR REMOVAL I was chatting with someone on my flight back from my vacation. She lived in another country where salons are hard to come by or if they are around, they aren't very good. So, sometimes a girl has got to depend on herself. You can make one on your own so easily. So when I described it to her, she loved it and she said I just have to put it up online. So here goes: Wax recipe Ingredients 2 cups sugar ¼ cup water ¼ cup lemon juice Method Pour the sugar, water and lemon juice in a saucepan, and heat it over a low flame. How do you know it is done? Take a glass of water and put a drop of wax into it. Benefits of making your own WAX: 1. Waxing strips: We used to do this in college all the time. DIY Beauty: 3 Homemade Cleansers Recipes | beautifulwithbrains.com Cleansing our faces is one of the most important steps in our beauty routine as it removes all traces of dirt and other impurities from our skin, leaving it clean and bright. Although there are lots of good and inexpensive cleansers on the market, it is a lot of fun sometimes to make your own. If you wanna try it, here are a few recipes: 1. Ingredients: - 1 strawberry (better if fresh) - 1 tablespoon of yogurt (plain whole-milk type works best) - 1 drop of your favourite essential oil (optional) Mash the strawberry. 2. Ingredients: - 1/2 cup oatmeal (in alternative, you can use cornmeal) - plain yogurt as needed (add enough yogurt to form a paste) Put the oatmeal in a bowl and add as much yogurt as you need to form a paste (2 teaspoons should be enough but you can add more if necessary). 3. Ingredients: - 1 tablespoon of apple juice - 2 tablespoons of skin milk - 1 tablespoon of honey Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl. Have you ever made a homemade cleanser?

But don’t fear: Follow our step-by-step guides, and you’ll learn how to get each look right. 1. Red Lipstick “I shy away from red lipstick because I’m afraid it’s too flashy and will make me look like a clown.” If you’re used to wearing muted colors, a rich, saturated red may seem too bold for anything but special occasions. Application Tip“Paint on color with a lipbrush,” suggests King. A handy guide to choosing the red that complements your skin tone: Light Skin: Cool blue-based reds like Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lipcolor in Red Revival ($7.49; at drugstores) will enhance your rosy complexion. Dark Skin: Pick a red with a touch of brown to highlight the warm hints of caramel in your skin. 2. Avoid a hair “don’t” by speaking your stylist’s language. “Thin it out." “I want highlights.” 3.
