Christina Pirello: Change Your Life With Chia When you think of chia seeds, you most likely think of the tiny seeds that were the joke of a generation as we slathered them on clay sculptures and gleefully watched the sprouting of 'green hair' on Homer Simpson and porcupines. Chia seeds (salvia hispanica) are wild seeds with origins in Mexico and Guatemala dating back to pre-Columbian times and have a long history as human food. Domesticated by ancient Mexicans in 2600 BC, these tiny seeds were a staple food of both Native American and Mexican cultures. Known to those cultures as 'the running food,' chia seeds and water were the main ingredients that fueled Aztec warriors in their conquests. Chris Solinsky Training – Correct Your Form and Prevent Injuries Earlier this year, Chris Solinsky stunned the nation as he shattered the American Record in the 10,000 meters. Running 26:59 in his debut 10k, Solinsky became the first ever American under 27 minutes and the fastest ever non-African. A month later, Solinsky ran 12:56 for 5,000 meters – the 4th American under 13 minutes. What’s his training secret? Well, hard work. While many factors have contributed to Solinsky’s consistency including core workouts and maximizing recovery time, one aspect of his training that is evident when I watch him race is his incredible efficiency. Hungry Kittens Homemade Toothpaste The basis of homemade toothpaste is baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Either one in huge doses can be dangerous, so DO NOT INGEST! Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is a mild abrasive and has anti-bacterial properties. Hydrogen peroxide helps by break down bacterial films with its foaming action. I used a 3% solution, but anything you can find at a local drug store should be ok. Vegetable-base glycerin liquid lends a nice consistency and sweetness, but is completely optional. I definitely recommend using some kind of flavoring. Basic Ratio: 6 parts baking soda : 1 part vegetable based glycerin : 1 part hydrogen peroxide solution : flavor to taste This makes a nice paste. Most over the counter hydrogen peroxide solutions are not suitable for ingestion.
