Top 10 Things That Determine Happiness | MintLife Blog | Personal Finance News & Advice photo: meddygarnet Happiness is, by nature, a subjective quality with a definition like a moving target. There is scant evidence — qualitative or quantitative — to lend convincing support to those life variables most critical in determining individual happiness, which is likely why past researchers committed to the scientific method rarely tried to tackle the subject. This is changing. While we’re not entirely convinced of this marriage between science and subjectivity, we can still offer up a top 10 of things that determine human happiness, as supported by this growing body of research. No.10 – Having a short memory Are you one to hold grudges? No.9 – Exacting fairness According to a recently published study in the prestigious journal Nature, people derive more happiness from scenarios and situations that result in a perceived fairness for everyone involved, even when this fairness goes against self-interest or comes at some personal cost. No.8 – Having lots of friendships No.2 – Good genes
How to Become an Early Riser It is well to be up before daybreak, for such habits contribute to health, wealth, and wisdom. – Aristotle Are morning people born or made? In my case it was definitely made. But after a while I couldn’t ignore the high correlation between success and rising early, even in my own life. … and the next morning, I got up just before noon. Hmmm… I tried again many more times, each time not getting very far with it. It’s hard to become an early riser using the wrong strategy. The most common wrong strategy is this: You assume that if you’re going to get up earlier, you’d better go to bed earlier. It seems there are two main schools of thought about sleep patterns. The second school says you should listen to your body’s needs and go to bed when you’re tired and get up when you naturally wake up. Through trial and error, I found out for myself that both of these schools are suboptimal sleep patterns. If you sleep set hours, you’ll sometimes go to bed when you aren’t sleepy enough.

I know, I’ve been there … and when I’m not careful, I still get there more than I want to. But when I’ve had a particularly hard time, I hit these moments where I’m in a foul mood, or I’m just feeling paralyzed, and I’m just stuck. I’m going to outline the framework that I’ve been using successfully to really get myself resourceful and motivated (and in a better mood) when I’m feeling stuck. First Up: Using A Framework to Escape From Paralyzing Emotions When we feel bad, it’s hard to “feel good” again. The reason for this is that steps take the emotion out of our situation and give us direction to simply act. You can call these verbal step-by-step tools anchors if you want, because they’re ways to anchor your emotional state to a time where you knew what to do and you felt prepared. Think about it. Dave

There are no mountains in the Swabian Alps, but hills - some of them quite big, so the Swabian Alps has hiking for all fitness levels. This past weekend we choose a small hike in the Swabian Alps since my fiance's mom was with us and she has heart problems. The hike started in the small town of Bad Urach. Our destination was Guetersteiner Wasserfall (German for waterfall) which could be reached by a flat well maintained loop that was 3km round trip. There were plenty of extensions including a trail that led to a fortress with more distance and elevation gain for those with more stamina than we had on this particular day. The variety of hiking options in the Swabian Alps are endless. More hikes in the Swabian Alps: Hiking to Hohenzollern CastleG8YQE548JDP4

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley has certified a ballot initiative for next November that, if passed, would enable a physician to write a prescription for a lethal dose of medicine if a terminally ill adult who is mentally competent asks for it. Proponents had until Dec. 7 to gather the needed 68,911 signatures in support of the measure to have it qualify for the state ballot. Speaking at an HMS medical ethics forum, Boston College Law School Professor Emeritus Charles H. “What has been the experience in Oregon and Washington? “I don’t think we should give doctors immunity,” Annas said.
