1 Million Pounds Of Food Per Acre! Solar Powered Vertical Aquaponics System MISSION STATEMENT & PROJECT GOAL: Build an aquaponics system which maximizes crop yield per square foot and share that design under an OPEN SOURCE license for anyone to improve upon, modify, and use for producing organically grown food in their local area. The ultimate goal of building and improving this system is getting as close as possible to an annual crop yield of 1 Million pounds of organically grown food per acre. UP TO 20 TIMES THE CROP YIELD PER SQUARE FOOT (or more): I’ve designed a self contained vertical aquaponics system which MAXIMIZES the annual food yield per square foot of land to 20 times or more than traditional flat farming row crops. 100sqft FOOTPRINT: Each module covers a horizontal area of only 100sqft which means almost anyone can build one of these modules in their back yard without taking up much space at all. 2000sqft VERTICAL GROW AREA: Each module has a vertical grow area of 2000 square feet.
Aquaponics Defined “I’d like to know what is aquaponics and how it works” Are you wondering “what is Aquaponics?” The most simple definition is that it is the marriage of aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (the soil-less growing of plants) that grows fish and plants together in one integrated system. In combining both systems aquaponics capitalizes on the benefits and eliminates the drawbacks of each. The problems with traditional soil-based gardening The weedsThe amount of water requiredThe soil-borne insectsThe heavy digging, the bending, the back strainThe deer, the bunnies, the raccoonsKnowledge required to know when to water, when and how to fertilize, and what is the composition of the soil These issues are all solved with hydroponics, but hydroponics has problems of its own Traditional hydroponic systems rely on the careful application of expensive, man-made nutrients made from mixing together a concoction of chemicals, salts and trace elements. The problem with recirculating aquaculture -

Simple Aquaponics System For Growing Your Own Food & Fish At Home This aquaponics system is different than most. It’s a scaled down version of the system Will Allen over at Growing Power Inc uses to grow 1 Million pounds of food on his 3 acre farm in Milwaukee, WI. The whole system uses just a single pump and uses very little energy to pump nutrient rich water up to the gravel bed on top for filtration. The upper bed is slightly angled so the water can slowly drain down to the second bed below. And then finally back into the main tank where the fish are kept. This system is scalable and will produce a large amount of food in a very small space when compared with traditional row cropping. This system has almost unlimited potential yield, and scalability. Also, this system can be housed in a greenhouse for year-round growing. So, what are you waiting for? Image: Comments comments
Aquaponic Gardening Rules of Thumb By Sylvia Bernstein and Dr. Wilson Lennard Many of our community site members have pointed out that we need some basic rules-of-thumb for aquaponic gardening. I’ve had the distinct honor of collaborating with Dr. Nothing we say below is set in stone and there are exceptions to almost every one of the listed rules-of-thumb given certain conditions. If you decide that you would like to go to a deeper understanding of these guidelines and their application then I recommend purchasing my book and online course, Aquaponic Gardening. One final caveat. Let’s get started… System type– Media bed is recommended for new, hobby growers. Grow Bed The industry standard is to be at least 12” (30 cm) deep to allow for growing the widest variety of plants and to provide complete filtration.Must be made of food safe materials and should not alter the pH of your system (beware of concrete). Fish tank Stocking Density– 1 pound of fish per 5 – 7 gallons of tank water (.5 kg per 20-26 liters) Media Water Flow pH

Cycling with fishes What follows is an article that was published at Growing Edge.com last month as part of a series I’m writing on “Aquaponics How To”. I hope you find it useful! _____________________________________ If you have been following this series on how to build a media based aquaponics system, you now have your aquaponics fish tank and grow bed interconnected by flood and drain plumbing which is ready to be powered by a pump. Bacteria are the magic that takes the unusable aquaponics fish waste and creates a near perfect plant fertilizer. What is Cycling? Cycling starts when you (or your fish) first add ammonia to your system. The good news is that ammonia attracts nitrosomonas, the first of the two nitrifying bacteria that will populate your system. Once you detect nitrates in your water and the ammonia and nitrite concentrations have both dropped to .5 or lower your system will be fully cycled and aquaponics will have officially begun! From food forests to healthy soil. 5 Incredible permaculture videos. When I posted 7 no-cost ways to grow more food from your veggie garden, one commenter argued that mulching was not a good strategy—suggesting that gardeners should plant polycultures instead, following the principles of permaculture. While I'd dispute the idea that there is one "right" way of gardening, or that mulching and polycultures, or mulching and permaculture for that matter, are mutually exclusive, I do agree on one matter. Understanding permaculture design—which can loosely be described as a design discipline informed by principles observed in nature—can definitely make you a better gardener. We've posted a fair few videos on permaculture and permaculture-inspired gardening over the years. I thought I'd round up a few of our favorites. Campus lawn becomes permaculture food forest.
