101-year-old Detroit woman evicted in foreclosure DETROIT (AP) — A 101-year-old woman was evicted from the southwest Detroit home where she lived for nearly six decades after her 65-year-old son failed to pay the mortgage. Texana Hollis was evicted Monday and her belongings were placed outside the home. Her son, Warren Hollis, said he didn't pay the bill for several years and disregarded eviction notices. "I kept it from her because I didn't want to worry her," Warren Hollis told WXYZ-TV for a report that aired Monday night. Wayne County Chief Deputy Treasurer David Szymanski told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the Hollises took out an adjustable-rate mortgage in 2002. "They ended up owing $80,000 on the home," Szymanski said. County records show that property taxes were paid on the home through summer 2010. A neighbor was letting Texana and Warren Hollis live in a rental house across the street from the home they shared, and Texana Hollis' belongings were being moved there.

Hey, Facebook: Are You Really Censoring Political Free Speech in America? Either Facebook’s spam filters are completely out of whack or political free speech is being actively censored on the social network. What’s happening: On Sun. Aug. 14, liberal page administrators and bloggers in my network started spreading the word that they had been blocked from posting ANY content on ANY other wall for 15 days. No prior warning was given. The offenders are charged with posting links to news/opinion articles – such as this liberal’s guide to Republican talking points – a small number of times to LIKE-MINDED pages with which they regularly interact. The slap: Facebook indicates these activists have been posting “spam and irrelevant” content. A check of Facebook’s community standards confirms that NONE of the blocked content or pages I’ve heard about have violated ANY of these rules (engaging in hate, violence, phishing, theft, spam for commercial purposes, etc.) Is it Facebook’s Fault? The explanation: The link had been reported as “abusive or spammy” content. Solutions

Marijuana research could yield prescribed drugs By The Associated Press, cbc.ca, Updated: January 23, 2012 9:55 AM A quarter-century after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first prescription drugs based on the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, additional medicines derived from or inspired by the cannabis plant itself could soon be making their way to pharmacy shelves, according to drug companies, small biotech firms and university scientists. A British company, GW Pharma, is in advanced clinical trials for the world's first pharmaceutical developed from raw marijuana instead of synthetic equivalents — a mouth spray it hopes to market in the U.S. as a treatment for cancer pain. Sativex contains marijuana's two best known components — delta 9-THC and cannabidiol — and already has been approved in Canada, New Zealand and eight European countries for a different usage, relieving muscle spasms associated with multiple sclerosis. Walnuts ranked No. 1 nut for heart health Walnuts are the No. 1 nut for heart health, says a researcher who presented his findings Sunday at the American Chemical Society annual meeting. That's because walnuts were found to have more antioxidants -- and better-quality antioxidants -- than other popular nuts tested, says Joe Vinson, PhD, a researcher at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania. Antioxidants protect cells against damage caused by harmful molecules known as free radicals. The damage can play a role in heart disease and other health conditions. When Vinson analyzed the amount of antioxidants found in walnuts and a variety of other nuts, walnuts came out on top. "Twenty-eight grams of walnuts (an ounce) have more antioxidants than the sum of what the average person gets from fruits and vegetables," he says. Still, nuts only account for about eight percent of daily antioxidant intake for most people. Consumers should, however, keep nut consumption on the small side.

Troy Davis denied clemency 1 day before execution ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia's board of pardons rejected a last-ditch clemency bid from Troy Davis on Tuesday, one day before his scheduled execution, despite support from figures including an ex-president and a former FBI director for the claim that he was wrongly convicted of killing a police officer in 1989. Davis is scheduled to die Wednesday at 7 p.m. EDT by injection for killing off-duty Savannah officer Mark MacPhail, who was shot dead while rushing to help a homeless man being attacked. It is the fourth time in four years that Davis' execution has been scheduled by Georgia officials. "Justice was finally served for my father," said Mark MacPhail Jr., who was an infant when his father was gunned down. Davis has captured worldwide attention after his supporters raised concerns that he was a victim of mistaken identity.
