Bandana Cowl

Bandana Cowl
Working at Purl Soho, I have a front row seat to the parade of effortlessly chic people that give our neighborhood its renowned style. From here I can report that, for men and women alike, this season's prevailing trend in neckwear is the bandana. Jauntily tied around the neck, it tops off everything from Sunday's T-shirt and jeans to Friday's night-on-the-town dress! My Bandana Cowl is inspired by my desire to make "effortlessly chic" even more effortless. I chose to make my Cowl out of Swan's Island Bulky, a brand new yarn made from a beautiful blend of undyed merino and alpaca that feels wonderfully soft against the skin. The Materials 1 skein Swans Island Bulky, naturally dyed colors are 100% Organic Merino and undyed colors (Natural, Oatmeal and Seasmoke) are 85% Organic Merino and 15% Alpaca. This cowl uses approximately 100 - 130 yards and would be stunning made out of many of Purl Soho's yarns. 2 skeins of Jade Sapphire's 8 Ply Cashmere, 100% Mongolian Cashmere. The Pattern Gauge

combined knitting Q&A Q I am having terrible problems holding the yarn in place to pick/scoop for my purl stitches. I've tried several methods of wrapping and finally ended up holding the yarn between my index and thumb, which is very awkward, slow and uncomfortable. This method is so fast for knitting, that if I can master the purl I will probably stay with it, rather than the English (wrap) style that I've always used. I hope you can help. A When I teach knitting I tell my students that my dream for them is that they'll discover their own "perfect" method of knitting that suits them, and I'll never tell them that they're doing anything "wrong" as long as they're getting the result they want... The way you purl determines how your stitch will lay on the needle.

SANDS memory blanket (charity knit) with Pattern Errata - KNITTING My mum found out about this charity from the Rural (a Scottish version of the Women's Institute) and brought home a pattern. So many people are affected by the loss of babies so when I was offered an opportunity to do something small to help people going through this I decided to give it a shot. They really wanted all the blankets to be white seeing as that is quite neutral and respectful so I tried pretty hard to keep it white which made working on this all the slower, unfortunately. The charity's website is here: I hope that doesn't count as advertising! The pattern can be found here: My copy of the pattern had an error in the border which made it look very different to the border in the photo but my Mum helped me to correct it. This is the corrected version of the border pattern: Row 1: As given Even-numbered rows: slip one, knit to end Row 3: slip 1, knit 1 (yarn fwd, knit 2tog) twice.

Knitting Tips If you can locate a join at a seaming location, that is always best. You can just run the ends along the inside of the seamed edge, and it's invisible. All other joins are slightly imperfect, so best to locate them inconspicuously if possible, like under the arm of a sweater. Felting will only work with wool, and some other animal fibers. For non-felted joins, you will have an end that pops out of work slightly; make sure this end is where you want it, by leaving a bit of yarn (1/4"-1/2") sticking out on the inside of the garment, or in as inconspicuous a place as possible.
