Linking & Connecting Words It is essential to understand how Linking Words, as a part of speech, can be used to combine ideas in writing - and thus ensure that ideas within sentences and paragraphs are elegantly connected - for the benefit of the reader. This will help to improve your writing (e.g. essay, comment, summary (scientific) review, (research) paper, letter, abstract, report, thesis, etc.). "Linking Words" is used as a term to denote a class of English words which are employed to link or connect parts of speech or even whole sentences. You can help your students solidify these concepts by teaching them in tandem rather than as two separate pieces of your language arts block. Alphabet knowledge is a significant predictor of future reading success. These activities can be as simple as tracking the alphabet while singing "The ABC Song". After children have learned several letters of the alphabet, they will begin learning the sounds that letters make in words. A picture sort is a categorization task in which pictures are sorted into categories of similarities and differences. Once children know most letter-sound correspondences and are representing beginning and ending sounds in their spellings, they may begin to sort words as well as pictures. Picture and word sorts can easily be done in group settings using pocket charts. Picture and word sorts can be complemented with games.
