Why Teens Don’t Tweet We struck a nerve with a lot of people this morning with our article Stats Confirm It: Teens Don't Tweet. In it, we explained how a recent Nielsen report shows that only 16 percent of Twitter users are under 25. The response was overwhelming - especially from teenagers who currently use Twitter. While the entire debate is a healthy one, there's been a lack of focus on the most important question of all: Why aren't teens using Twitter? The Stats If you read our Teens Don't Tweet article, you'll come across two key stats: that 84% of Twitter users are over 24 years old, and that 90% of TweetDeck users are over that age as well. You can probably attribute this to the network effect: since more adults are using Twitter, more adults feel the need to try it. There are other statistical studies that show this trend is prevalent as well. Even as far back as January, people were picking up on this trend. So what's going on? But does this really interest teenagers?

Diane Ravitch's blog Das Internet ist ein Dorf Ein Freund von mir hat vor Jahren seine Lehre in einem brandenburgischen Dorf gemacht. Wann immer ich ihn allein oder zusammen mit anderen Freunden während dieser Zeit dort besuchte, habe ich erfahren, was es heißen kann, in einem Dorf zu leben. Wenn wir die Straße entlang gingen, verlangsamten die vorbeifahrenden Autos ihre Geschwindigkeit und die Insassen schauten, wer denn da Fremdes im Dorf sei. Menschen kamen an die Fenster ihrer Häuser und schauten. Hinter dem eigenen Rücken hörte man es bisweilen tuscheln. Eigentlich ist dieses Bild aber sehr gut auf das heutige Internet bzw. Wünschenswert wäre, dass diese Ordnung beinhaltet, dass man beispielsweise nicht irgendwelchen Nachbarn frech in die Fenster schaut oder auf andere Weise deren Privatsphäre verletzt, was man auch in einem Dorf nicht tun würde. Interessant finde ich auch, was Seth Godin vor ein paar Monaten gesagt hat: “The only reason that brands exist is because they invented the road.” Soweit ein paar spontane Gedanken.

Yes, We Must As the new members of 111th Congress wander through the building looking for their desks and lockers, it may feel for some of them like the first day at school. They should hold on to that feeling. One of the biggest challenges they face is sorting out American education. Given the recession, the dire situation in the Middle East and the general state of the planet, education is probably not at the top of their to-do list. It must be soon. Transforming education has to be at the root of everything the new administration hopes to achieve, and nothing it does in the short term will be sustainable otherwise. President-elect Obama swayed the nation on a promise of change and the renewal of the American Dream. All of this is the work of education. My family and I moved to America almost eight years ago. President-elect Obama has said that NCLB was well intentioned, and it was. I said that the premise of the act is flawed.

Die Antworten sind bemerkenswert. Zwei Milliarden Menschen nutzen weltweit das Internet. Die Debatten um die neue Technologie verlaufen allerdings nicht überall gleich. Die Veröffentlichung von "Payback", dem Buch des FAZ-Mitherausgebers Frank Schirrmacher hat der deutschen Debatte zwar die Tiefe gegeben, die das Thema verdient. Im Vorfeld der Veröffentlichung gab Frank Schirrmacher dem amerikanischen Literaturagent John Brockman ein Interview für dessen Onlinemagazin für Wissenschaftskultur Edge.org. Da ging es auch um die Frage, die Schirrmacher in seinem Buch behandelt - wie verändert das Internet das Denken? Die Antworten wurden jetzt auf Edge.org veröffentlicht. Mehr zerstreut als unterstützt Die Antworten fielen sehr unterschiedlich aus. Taleb wird übrigens von der Veröffentlichung seines Textes nicht viel mitbekommen haben.
Stephen Downes: Fairness and Equity in Education The Idea of Fairness If we were asking questions of the children in a classroom, we wouldn't ask just one person over and over, right? We would want to spread the questioning around. We wouldn't design our tests so that only one person could pass. There is growing recognition that there might be something to this principle. The United States came out only in the middle of the PISA rankings. As the PISA authors noted, poverty itself wasn't the problem. All of that said, while it is all very well to appeal to some sort of principle of fairness, the fact remains that there is no widely accepted economy of fairness. Efforts to ground the principle in moral or philosophical arguments are equally futile. The Golden Rule allows the powerful to legitimize their power, and does not promote fairness at all. If there are grounds for fairness, then, what are those grounds? Network stability and network death We get the sense, reading about the power law, that it is natural and common.

Wo bleibt die wirklich brauchbare Web-Plattform? Im Internet fehlt bisher eine ausgereifte und dominante Plattform für Web-Applikationen. Im Prinzip ist das Web “nur” eine Sammlung von Protokollen, die eigentliche Funktionalität muss man sich als Programmierer selbst zusammenbauen. Mit zunehmendem Abstand zum ersten Lesen des Manifests scheint sich für mich die diskursive Blase um ein neues (bzw. in den deutschen Sprachraum neu importiertes) Buzzword leider als eben solche zu erweisen: Vor allem Spannung an der Oberfläche. Die in diesem Beitrag formulierten Zweifel sollen einigen Kerngedanken einzelner Thesen des “Manifests” in keiner Weise ihre Berechtigung absprechen; Qualität beispielsweise ist für viele Funktionen von Medien eine zentrale Forderung (ob für Journalismus im System der Massenmedien, für die Programme der Wissenschaft etc. – kontextabhängig und relativ zum jeweiligen Medium und seiner Funktion). While the complete history of the Internet could easily fill a few books, this article should familiarize you with key milestones and events related to the growth and evolution of the Internet between 1969 to 2009. 1969: Arpanet Arpanet was the first real network to run on packet switching technology (new at the time).
