Little Known Ways to Brand on the Cheap: 99 Tips for Poor Web Startups “If you build it, they will come.” That might have worked for Kevin Costner in the Field of Dreams, but if you’ve built a good site and are expecting people to just show up, you’ll be waiting a very long time. The days of setting up shop and automatically getting traffic just by being online are over. Today, if you want to have success on the web you need a unique angle and a reputable brand so that visitors have something to remember you by. But despite its importance, surprisingly, most webmasters have either never heard of branding, or just choose to ignore it. If you have heard of branding, then you’ve probably heard two things: it takes a long time to see results, and it’s expensive. 12 LinkedIn secrets to supercharge your social networking To know me is to know that I love—love—LinkedIn. At 150 million members and growing, LinkedIn is a powerful professional networking tool, and it’s not just for job seekers. Frankly, if you’re in the professional world and not using LinkedIn, I’m not sure what you’re thinking. Our team at V3 uses it for new business development, competitive research and analysis, participating in groups and discussions, and engaging with and learning from peers—and, of course, it’s the go-to site for savvy job seekers everywhere. One of the cool things about LinkedIn is there’s always something new to learn. I do a lot of corporate LinkedIn training and these are some of my favorite tricks and tips: 1. 7 fascinating TED Talks on the benefits of gaming This weekend, hundreds of video games enthusiasts lined up in the cold, waiting 12 hours-plus to be the first to get their hands on Nintendo’s new console, the Wii U. And when the game Call of Duty: Black Ops was released in 2010, gamers around the world played it for more than 600 million hours in just the first 45 days. That is the equivalent of 68 years. While some people worry about the popularity of video games, in today’s talk, brain scientist Daphne Bavelier suggests that gaming may be far more beneficial than we think (in moderation) — even if the game is all about shooting up the enemy. “Most of you have thought, ‘Come on, can’t you do something more productive than shooting zombies?’ In the lab, Bavelier and her team measure the impact of gameplay on the brain. It’s another common trope that gaming causes attention problems. Initial studies suggest that these benefits may be trainable. To hear more about Bavelier’s studies, watch her talk.
