The term was coined in 2008 by David Cormier, manager of web communications and innovations at the University of Prince Edward Island. The first MOOC was created the previous year, at Utah State University. MOOCs are designed like college courses but are available to anyone anywhere in the world, at no cost. Coursera is perhaps the most well-known of the online education facilitators. EdX is another non-profit course site created by founding partners Harvard and MIT and based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Kids like learning homophones thanks to online homophone games as well as online kids dictionaries. There are many homophone resources for teachers available for creating homophone lesson plans, homophone worksheets and homophone classroom activities. Also online, a kids’ thesaurus is a useful way to create homophone lists as is a kids’ dictionary. Homophone games for elementary school students are very popular with third, fourth and fifth graders, while learning homophone definitions in sixth through eighth grade is a good precursor to playing middle school homophone games. ESL students also greatly benefit from using fun online homophone games as these help them differentiate English vocabulary words that sound identical but that have different meanings, whether or not they are spelled differently.

Word of the Day Spiky-Headed Sharks Survived Mass Extinction, Surprising Scientists A family of small sharks—some of which had spiky heads—cruised the ancient seas for far longer than scientists had suspected, surviving to about 120 million years ago. Their surprising survival suggests that deep oceans sheltered predators during past mass extinctions. Some 252 million years ago, roughly 90 percent of the planet's marine species perished in the Permian-Triassic mass extinction event. Tied to everything from volcanic eruptions to ocean oxygen depletion to severe climate change, the Great Dying represents the most severe challenge to life's survival seen in the fossil record. Among the victims were thought to be a wide variety of early cladodont sharks. However, an international team led by Switzerland's Guillaume Guinot of the Natural History Museum in Geneva, reports in the journal Nature Communications that the sharks survived the Great Dying, lasting at least another 170 million years—well into the age of dinosaurs.
