Imagine taking a university exam in your own home, under the watchful eye of a webcam or with software profiling your keystrokes or your syntax to see whether it really is you answering the questions. Online university courses have become the Next Big Thing for higher education, particularly in the United States, where millions of students have signed up for courses from some of the most upmarket universities. With spiralling costs and student loan debts crossing the trillion dollar barrier this year, the online university has been seen as a way of reaching many more people for much less money. But a major stumbling block has been how such digital courses are assessed.

- Developing Training With What You Carry In Your Pocket Web video, as a means to deliver educational content, is clearly an idea whose time has come. What started as the result of the full motion compression (MPEG) efforts of Philips Interactive Media in 1992, has resulted in the proliferation of web-based instructional video content. For example, YouTube reports that over 72 hours of video content is uploaded to its platform every minute. Many of those videos are instructional or educational in nature. Companies including Microsoft, Cisco and Cloud Access maintain YouTube channels that exist for the sole purpose of providing training materials to their customers. Designing for mobile learning and communications From the moment we wake up in the morning to the moment we fall at sleep at night we are “in near-constant visual contact with bright, pulsating rectangles” (Dr. Richard Menken, 2009). Originally published as part of a spoof article in The Onion, Menken’s quote rings startlingly true today with the rise of ubiquitous computing. The volume and intensity of the information that passes through these glowing rectangles is transforming and increasing at a rapid rate. At some point this massive influx of information needs to be counter-balanced. Dense information needs to be simplified and sorted and messages need to be sharpened and focused.

Mlearning Infokit John Dewey, writing in the early years of the twentieth century, may not have foreseen the proliferation of 21st century ‘mobile devices’ but, in the quotation to the right, he does point out something that remains relevant: that mobile learning involves change, initiative and adaptability. Mobile learning involves change in the sense that the ability to communicate with tutors and peers, as well as access learning resources, changes what is possible in education. It takes initiative for leaders to create a vision to sustain that change and, finally, mobile learning requires adaptability by members of staff to carry out the change.
