As Larry Husten of CardioBrief reports, Erasmus MC’s investigation included that Poldermans — perhaps best known for his work on beta-blockers — has admitted to acts of misconduct but not to fraud. That’s not merely a distinction without a difference. Poldermans, for instance, claims that the suspect gaps in his data records, which Erasmus MC calls “serious shortcomings” in fact reflect losses due to water damage and files the university itself trashed.

AAUP Decries Social-Media Policy in Kansas and Treatment of Colo. Scholar – The Ticker - Blogs The American Association of University Professors on Friday released a pair of statements denouncing a controversial social-media policy adopted by the Kansas Board of Regents, and the University of Colorado at Boulder’s treatment of a tenured sociology professor, as violations of academic freedom. The two cases have raised fears about a weakening of academic freedom at a time when social media can spread news of a professor’s remarks and teaching practices far beyond the boundaries of a single college campus. The social-media policy in Kansas grants chief executives of the state’s public colleges the authority to discipline employees over controversial statements made online. The state’s Board of Regents adopted the policy after a University of Kansas journalism professor set off a storm of criticism with a controversial tweet about the National Rifle Association. The Colorado case involved a tenured sociology professor, Patricia A. Return to Top

Guth, a tenured journalism professor, after he responded to the shootings at the Washington Navy Yard with this comment on Twitter: "#NavyYardShooting The blood is on the hands of the #NRA. Next time, let it be YOUR sons and daughters. Shame on you. May God damn you."

The Kansas Regents’ (Unintentional) Honesty about Academic Freedom By William K. Black I published a column this morning about the Kansas Regents’ effective elimination of academic freedom of tenure. In thinking about the rule I realized that I had failed to make in blunt terms five points about how radical a rule it was. I circulated these five points about an hour ago to a number of my contacts. The Regents’ rule allows the CEO to terminate tenured faculty upon their arrest for a felony. Opinion: KSU prof weighs in on social media policy On New Year’s Eve, the Kansas Board of Regents announced that they would be accepting “recommendations for amendments” to their new social media policy until April. While their decision to involve “representatives from each state university” is a welcome change (they passed the policy without consulting any faculty, staff or administration), “amending” this ill-conceived policy is a bit like hiring an architect after you’ve already built the house. ...
