When I mention this to trainee teachers, many of them assume I am only talking about YouTube clips which have been specifically created for language learners. When this happens, I’ll show them a few simple ways to use authentic YouTube clips for speaking practice. Remember the old adage: a picture tells a thousand words. 1. Type of video: Any clip with physical movement and actions. Language focus: Tenses and questions using tenses Film is primarily a visual medium. Watch the clip with the sound turned off and pause at regular intervals. Let your learners take control of the pause button so they can practise asking questions in different tenses. 2. Type of video: Scene between 2-4 people with lots of dialogue. Language focus: Natural sounding, conversational English. Blending photos is easy to do in Photoshop thanks to layer masks, yet finding two photos with similar colors isn’t always so easy, and you end up with a photo effect that doesn’t really seem to look right because the colors don’t match. With this technique, you don’t need to worry about the colors in the images at all because we’ll be removing them completely and adding our own colors to blend the two photos seamlessly.
