The PDF format is derived from PostScript, the page description language developed by Adobe, but a PDF file is much smaller than a corresponding PostScript file, so it is more suitable for electronic delivery. Anyone with the right software using Apple Macintosh, Microsoft Windows 8/7/Vista/XP/2000/2003/2008/2012 Server x86/x64, Windows NT, and Sun and Hewlett Packard workstations can view any PDF document. cairo (graphics) Cairo (stylized as cairo) is a software library used to provide a vector graphics-based, device-independent API for software developers. It is designed to provide primitives for 2-dimensional drawing across a number of different backends. Cairo is designed to use hardware acceleration[3] when available. Cairo is free software. There is a formal proposal on standardizing C++ 2D graphic API basing on a mechanical transformation of Cairo.[5] The Cairo drawing model The Cairo drawing model is somewhat unorthodox and relies on a three layer model. Cairo is popular in the open source community for providing cross-platform support for advanced 2D drawing.
Package Explorer for Open XML Open XML documents are simply ZIP packages, but they follow a standardized architecture called the Open Packaging Convention. You can work with OPC packages (as used by Open XML, XPS, and various other formats) using simple tools such as WINZIP and Notepad, but if you're trying to be productive you'll find that approach tedious. If you want a better tool for this kind of work, and one that can also validate the parts within an OPC package or handle other common Open XML development chores, look no further: Package Explorer is what you want, and it's an open-source project on Codeplex so you can get it with full source code. Wouter Van Vugt is the architect of Package Explorer, and Doug Mahugh sat down with Wouter in Building 20 recently to discuss the status of the program and see a demonstration of some of its recently added new functionality. If you're doing Open XML development, this utility is a must-have for your Open XML toolbox!
Best Practices for Installing and Using Printer Drivers With Win This article describes best practices for installing and using printer drivers with Windows 2000 Terminal Services. In Windows 2000 and later, the architecture of printer drivers was changed to unify the interface and add reliability to the server. Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Printer Drivers If you upgrade a server from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000, remove the existing Windows NT 4.0 printer drivers before the upgrade, and then install the equivalent Windows 2000 printer drivers after the upgrade. To determine if Windows NT 4.0 printer drivers are installed on a Windows 2000 Server, use the Printers tool in Control Panel. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers. On the File menu, click Server Properties.Click the Drivers tab.Under Installed printer drivers, select any driver that is labeled as a Windows NT 4.0 printer driver, then click Remove. After you remove the Windows NT 4.0 printer driver, use the Printers tool to install a Windows 2000 version of the printer driver.
Poppler (software) The project was started by Kristian Høgsberg with two goals in mind:[4] To provide PDF rendering functionality as a shared library, in order to centralize maintenance effortTo go beyond the goals of Xpdf, and integrate with functionality provided by modern operating systems As of the version 0.18 release in 2011, the poppler library represents a complete implementation of ISO 32000-1, the PDF format standard, and is the first major free PDF library to support its forms and annotations features.[3] The name "Poppler" comes from the animated series Futurama episode "The Problem with Popplers".[2] A number of free software applications use Poppler to render PDF documents[5] Some characteristics of the back-ends include: Example: pdftotext file.pdf - | grep string
Open Packaging Convention (OPC) - Derek Smyth's Software De Was reading MSDN Magazine through the week and there is an article in it on OPC. Open Packaging Convention The Open Packaging Conventions (OPC) is a container-file technology initially created by Microsoft to store a combination of XML and non-XML files that together form a single entity such as an Open XML Paper Specification (OpenXPS) document. OPC-based file formats combine the advantages of leaving the independent file entities embedded in the document intact and resulting in much smaller files compared to normal use of XML. Specifications[edit] The OPC is specified in Part 2 of the Office Open XML standards ISO/IEC 29500:2008 and ECMA-376.[1][2] The ISO/IEC 29500-2:2008 specification (and the 2nd edition of ECMA-376) makes a normative reference to PKWARE Inc's .ZIP File Format Specification version 6.2.0 (2004), and supplements it with a normative set of clarifications. Microsoft has submitted a draft in 2006 to the Internet Engineering Task Force for a "pack" URI Scheme ( to be used for URI references to OPC-based packages.
