Marvel at the Magnificent Marble Caves [35 PICS] Can you imagine something happening that would endanger these exquisite azure caverns? It might if Chile continues with plans to build five hydro-power dams in Patagonia. Photo #7 by © Jorge Leon Cabello The water has eroded the marble to create cavities and marble caves. There are different color shades, depending on the contents’ impurities. Amazing geological formations on Chilean side of Lake Carrera. It would be a real shame if the hydro-power dams damage the lake and the marble caves on top of the surrounding natural habitats for wildlife. View of the lake and where to find the marble caverns in the Aysen region of Chile.

Chronicle: Primates as prey, predators, competitors of snakes Photo by J. Headland/Courtesy of PNAS Reticulated python shot by Kekek Aduanan, the adult male Agta on the right, on June 9, 1970, at the headwaters of the Koso River in the Sierra Madre of Aurora Province, Luzon, Philippines. Note the snake's girth and head size relative to the size of the men holding her carcass. More than a quarter of the men in a modern Filipino hunter-gatherer group have been attacked by giant pythons, reports a study that also concludes that humans and snakes not only eat and are eaten by each other, but have long been competitors for the same prey. Skin of the same python as above after the two hunters and Headland butchered it, thereby providing about 55 pounds of meat to the men's families and fellow group members. Human aversion to snakes may be a result of a shared evolutionary history, researchers have often speculated, but since snakes swallow their prey whole, little fossil evidence remains to help define the relationship between snakes and primates.
Extreme Minimalism I’ve drawn an unusual amount of attention to my minimalism project this week. First, Dan Patterson of ABC Radio News interviewed me about my 15 things. Dan is one of those amazing interviewers that you wish you were just watching instead of getting interviewed by. Each question was eloquent and succinct. Then came a post by Scott at LaughingSquid, which really showed me the power of Tumblr. That night I had drinks with someone who had seen the story (on Reddit, which I can’t find), and I realized the story had spread. Alex Hillman let me crash on his couch after a panel last week on Rethinking Shelter at P’unk Avenue. The winning caption in a contest is “floordrobe.” The first question someone asks me when I tell them about the project is “How do you define something you own?” I don’t have a permanent address or a second pair of jeans. It’s how I imagine telling someone my child’s name would feel like. So, back to everything I own. Coffee cup? Here is the list, as of May 2, 2011.
Electricity Sparks New Life Into Indonesias Corals A weak, harmless voltage run through metallic structures underwater is reviving near-dead reefs. Cyanide and dynamite fishing as well as rising water temperatures had decimated corals off Bali. A technique borrowed from the 1970s uses a weak electrical current to charge underwater metal structures. The electrolysis provokes a fast build-up of limestone, helping corals flourish. Cyanide fishing and rising water temperatures had decimated corals off Bali until a diver inspired by a German scientist's pioneering work on organic architecture helped develop a project now replicated worldwide. Based on ""Biorock" technology, it is implemented in 20 countries, mainly in Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Pacific. In the turquoise waters of Pemuteran off the north coast of Bali where the project was launched in 2000, a metal frame known as "the crab" is covered with huge corals in shimmering colors where hundreds of fish have made their homes. "It's amazing, isn't it ?"
Global Food Disparity: A Photo Diary In an increasingly globalized world, it’s still sometimes shocking to see just how disparate our lives are compared with other human beings around the world. A book of photographs by Peter Menzel called "Hungry Planet: What the World Eats" ("©Peter Menzel www.menzelphoto.com. Ten Speed Press, published in 2005) makes a relevant point with great irony: at a time when hundreds of millions of people don't have enough to eat, hundreds of millions more are eating too much and are overweight or obese. In observing what six billion eat for dinner the authors note, "Today, more people are overweight than underweight." It is these cultural differences, emphasized and reinforced by the author, which exemplifies the lifestyles and dietary habits of people around the world. You can buy the book here.
