A Cozy Kitchen » Avocado Fries I have a particularly tragic memory of looking at rental houses with my friend when he first moved to LA and finding one that actually had an avocado tree in the backyard. I mean, a tree that was taller than the house and was heavy with ripe avocados This memory is tragic because my friend didn’t rent the house. If he had, I would have had a never ending supply to feed my avocado addiction.BTW – what are avocados, a vegetable? Some weird fruit? Stray dog becomes instant mom When a group of dog rescuers arrived at the market to show the dogs available for adoption, somebody had left 12 puppies on the street – 8 of them were approximately 5 weeks old. In shock, the rescuers didn’t know what to do. The group had recently canceled several adoption days at the market because of bad weather, so they were over their capacity with puppies still needing to be adopted out. Also, the abandoned puppies were so small that they needed to be fed every two hours, including at night. That’s when a spayed stray dog approached, lay down beside the shoe box where the puppies were sleeping, and began caring for them. She wouldn’t let anyone get near the babies. Very carefully, the rescuers placed the puppies closer to her. She began caressing them and offering the warmth of her belly to the newborns. The maternal instinct kicked in and… after a few hours, she had milk and was feeding the puppies. The rescue group named her Vida, which means “life” in Portuguese.

Autism deemed an asset for some jobs Every year, more than 26,000 children born in the U.S. are diagnosed with autism. Autism is considered a developmental spectrum disorder, and it affects people in many ways from mild social difficulties to a severe inability to communicate. An estimated half-million people under the age of 21 are autistic, and some 85 percent of them can expect to be unemployed or underemployed. But some innovative new companies are working to change these statistics. Specialisterne ("the specialists") is a company out of Denmark that trains people with autism to be skilled employees. In the United States, Aspiritech is a nonprofit Chicago company that recently launched a pilot program to train high-functioning autistics as testers for software development companies. So how do the jobs provided by these companies suit workers with autism? The companies claim those who are autistic have a talent for spotting imperfections. The companies create a give-and-take scenario.
Terrarium Centerpieces The other week, my good friend Stephanie and I planned out a craft weekend. Our mission: Terrariums. Not the kind you keep lizards in, but the kind you can seal up and watch the moss grow. It was fun, cheap, and easy, and while we were creating them I realized how awesome they would be as centerpieces at a wedding. They are totally unique, creative, and beautiful. Terrariums are meant to be long lasting, so you can even make some months before the wedding and still have them thriving in time for the big day. So lets get down to the nitty-gritty of how you can actually make them: Step 1: Materials • Glass containers in whatever size you heart most. • Good dirt and rocks. • Figurines or decorative rocks to place inside. • Horticultural Charcoal. • Moss (another one of those things you can find outside, but can also order if you don’t live somewhere it doesn’t grow naturally). • Spray bottle (for misting after wards).
