Finally, Google Has Come Up With A Predictable, Intuitive Sidebar Navigation Design - Now Please Add It To Everything [Update: Confirmed By Googlers!] What exactly is the deal with slide-out sidebar navigation? Is it a standard Holo thing? Is it not? 3rd-party developers aren't really sure what to do with it, and even Google-made apps are all over the place. Google Earth and Google Shopper were just updated with a new sidebar design, and, well, have you seen them? In order to understand what's so great about the new design, we have to talk about what's so crappy about the old designs. The Old Up Button This thing is called an "Up" button. The design doc for the Up button is right here. If a screen is the topmost one in an app (that is, the app's home), it should not present an Up button. The system Back button is used to navigate, in reverse chronological order, through the history of screens the user has recently worked with. Yeah... that sort of happens, but lately, instead of hiding the Up button at the top level, Google apps (and some third party ones) show an Up button that opens a slide-in navigation panel. The New Up Button
Clue – A fun and easy way to test what people remember on your website. AJAX Send an XMLHttpRequest To a Server Google Glass apps are easy to develop, but brutally difficult to design well Timothy Jordan, developer advocate for Glass, takes a small stage in a large anteroom at Moscone West. “[Glass] is a moonshot about our relationship to technology … technology that’s there when you need it and out of the way when you don’t.” He’s selling the device, but in this crowd, there’s no need. At this, the very first session for the Google Glass track at I/O, the session room seating a couple hundred developers had filled to capacity a half hour before the session started. I can’t stress enough how fascinated these people are with Glass. Jordan’s job for today is to guide those imaginations in the best directions. Jordan runs through a Glass demo — how to turn it on, how to take and share a picture. So far, Google’s Mirror API is the only way to build Glassware. There’s no native API yet for accessing the hardware or working offline, but Jordan says this tool, called the Glass Development Kit, is coming soon. Beyond the tech side, there’s the graphic design, UI, and UX.
Code !t: Yeyy!! My first Pokki is published! I already wrote about what is Pokki how useful it could be. I spent some time thinking, what Pokki can I built that will be useful in my everyday work. I often find myself searching for online tools that do some simple dev related tasks and I thought that it will be great idea to bundle all kind of such tools into one Pokki that stays on my taskbar and is always just a click away from me. What’s included in the first version For the first version and included three tools:Regex tool – very simple regex form that checks for a match or eventually replaces a string into string. The results One of the good things about Pokki is that they give you out of the box analytics about the usage of your app. Next steps … I have already planned some features for the next versions.
Before Hiring a Design Partner, Consider This - Sean Madden by Sean Madden | 9:00 AM May 20, 2013 Design is a service, not a magic spell. There are designers who do it well, and those who do it poorly ; some produce profitable outcomes, and some waste money. More and more companies view design as an important strategic element of their business and are seeking partners to help them understand how it can help. If you're setting out to do so, you'll need to confront uncertainty about how to get the most value from the investment and carefully consider what you're setting out to achieve. Understand your need. Engage constantly. Address your biases. Understand your capacity to act. Successful design outcomes require intentional beginnings, consistent work throughout, and rigorous maintenance following delivery.

Testing design: Testing users impressions of a design Design: The estimated time to read this article is 6 minutes It would be wrong to have a series on design methodology without looking at the subject of testing design. One of the fundamental principles behind Headscape’s design approach is to design with data. Design is subjective. What I like you may well hate and vice versa. The normal route for resolving this problem is to focus on what the user wants, rather than what the client or designer thinks is best. Testing the usability of a site is relatively easy. The first step is to know what you want to learn about the aesthetics. Asking users what they think isn’t enough It is not enough to just show users a design and ask them if they like it or not. First, whether they like a design is not the only criteria by which to judge it. Second, when asked what they think users fallback on comments such as “I don’t like the green.” Focus on brand value and personality The question now becomes, how do you test a design against a set of words?
