Additionally the literature clearly indicates that academics regard the terms ‘community’ and ‘education’ as misleading and ambiguous. There are three main uses of the term ‘community education’. 1. It is generally accepted that Henry Morris pioneered this form of community education in Cambridgeshire in 1922 when he was appointed as the County Education Secretary (now Chief Education Officer). Community education is not limited to England, probably the most powerful community education movement can be found in the USA and many schools now have interaction with adults in the surrounding community at academic, recreational and managerial levels (Midwinter 1973) (see Dewey). 2. 3.

Early life[edit] Freinet was born in Provence as the fifth of eight children. His own schooldays were deeply unpleasant to him and would affect his teaching methods and desire for reform. In 1920 he became an elementary schoolteacher in the village of Le Bar-sur-Loup. Educational reforms[edit] In 1923 Freinet purchased a printing press, originally to assist with his teaching, since his lung injury made it difficult for him to talk for long periods. Freinet created the teachers' trade union C.E.L. Freinet's teaching methods were at variance with official policy of the National Education Board, and he resigned from it in 1935 to start his own school in Vence.
