Photorealistic Charcoal Drawings of Epic Waves Though artwork created in Photoshop or Illustrator can be nothing short of extraordinary, sometimes it's more impressive to see pieces created by more traditional means. Brooklyn-based artist Robert Longo made these incredible drawings of massive, thundering waves using just charcoal (on mounted paper). Called Monsters, the drawings almost look like black and white photos of that crescendo moment before an epic wave breaks. I like what Metro Picture Gallery said about them: "Devoid of people, location and color, the looming crests of exploding power are notably singular portraits of emotional and physical forces. The near abstraction of the waves is strikingly dissimilar to the more familiar representations of the sea as poetic and romantic, or in terms of man against nature." Au fond Robert Longo met en scène nos peurs viscérales, celles de l’instinct collectif et celles plus individuelles que connaît tout un chacun, et il emploie les images les plus violentes de notre environnement en contraste avec les plus lénifiantes ou apparemment inoffensives comme les roses ou les visages d’enfants endormis, pour créer les séismes susceptibles d’induire une réaction.
Dirk Dzimirsky And to think, the only Dirk we knew works in Dallas. We ran across these beautiful drawings by Dirk Dzimirsky last night, and as much as we love how he composes faces, we love the way he captures water and movement around the subject's face. Dirk is a freelance illustrator and author based in Germany. Dirk says of his work, "I want to capture and describe a persons precence and specific inner self. Similar to what a detailed writer might employ in their analysis of an individual, I portray not only the physical attributes, but more importantly the subjects inner presence of life."
