Yarn Bombing, also known as Graffiti/ Guerilla/ Urban Knitting is a schizophrenic love child of Banksy and Martha Stewart. Ok, so I made that up. But if those two were to have a love child, I have no doubt he or she would be into graffiti knitting. Am I right or what? Turns out there are a number of blogs and books out there by rogue knitters who want to improve our urban landscape one stitch at a time. Anyway, the point is – how super awesome does it look? But hey, who knows. Word. Some of you may recognise this image from one of my posts back in June. This is technically cheating, but I don’t care cause I think it’s pretty funny and {almost} appropriate. Whoa! {images via here, here & here}

Now you can really look like a knitwit with designer stubble Updated: 23:17 GMT, 3 September 2010 It is the ultimate fashion accessory for anyone who thinks they might look good with a beard... but can't be bothered taking the time to grow one. Crochet enthusiast Tara Duff has created a range of beanies with fashionable facial hair attached - combining a little imagination with her passion for crocheting. While keeping a simple pattern, the beanies and beards come in a number of different colours, and sell online from £30. Goatee cozy: One of Tara Duff's crazy crochet creations is modelled at an ezotic locale by her husband Fun for the whole family: The beanies are not just for men, as Tara and her three children show that anyone can pull off the look Her designs are modelled by her husband - but don't be fooled into thinking that the comedy headgear is just for men. Mrs Duff and her three young children are also proud owners of a beard beanie - and there is even a special bunny design for those who really want to get into the spirit of Easter.
Crofters, crafters, diggers and dreamers: Romantics or radicals? by Naomi Millner, University of Bristol There’s a new political movement on the scene and it’s not afraid to get out its knitting-needles. Craftivism is “the practice of engaged creativity, especially regarding political or social causes” and “an idea whose time has come”, according to Betsy Greer’s (2007) definition. By teaching knitting lessons, crocheting hats for the less fortunate, and sewing blankets for abandoned animals craftivism “allows for creativity to expand previous boundaries and enter the arena of activism”, Greer continues, describing this turn to pre-industrial practical skills as part of a feminist praxis specific to the malls of contemporary consumerism. A heavily-trafficked hub of this community is Ravelry, a social network for knitters and crochet-lovers, where ‘yarnheads’ can catalogue their ‘stash’ (unused wool), find patterns, get advice, post pictures, and send messages. But what followed can only be described as a phenomenon of the times. References Endnote
A School in the Cloud and the Future of Learning | Wired Business Sugata Mitra, TED 2013. Photo: James Duncan Davidson Sugata Mitra is the kind of guy every kid wants to be their teacher. Unbelievably energized, always ready with a smile, and always ready to leave you and your classmates to your own devices. Mitra calls his approach to education “self-organized learning.” A professor of educational technology at Newcastle University, Mitra began his professional career as a physicist in New Delhi, India. Comfortably on his way in the software world, Mitra purchased a PC to use at home. But as he came home from work one day in 1999, past the slums of New Delhi, it struck Mitra that the kind of spark, the genius he saw in his son, couldn’t be restricted to his middle class demographic. Mitra did an odd experiment to prove his theory. What happened eight hours later, was that Mitra came back and saw the kids browsing the Internet. A colleague suggested that maybe a software coding student of Mitra’s had come by and taught them to browse the Internet.
Cook Clean Craft: Men's Jeans to Toddler Pants Tutorial I’ve seen a few blog posts for converting men’s pants or jeans to toddler-sized jeans, but they all seem to involve a lot of seam-ripping, deconstructing and lots of sewing. I was after a quicker and easier way – I get limited time at the sewing machine each week, and I want to see results! Also, the pants I had picked up cheaply at the thrift store had an unfortunate blow-out, so I needed to work around this: I prefer flat-front pants (where there is only elastic in the back) as I think they look a bit snazzier, but you could erasily do this with a full elastic waist. (Note: the pattern pieces won’t line up perfectly with the curve of the centre seam, but it shouldn’t make much difference to the fit of the pants.) Step 4. Step 5. Step 6. If you don’t have an overlocker, do a zig-zag stitch in the seam allowance before sewing with a machine, or just sew the seam and don’t worry about finishing off. Step 7. Step 8. Step 9. Step 10. Step 11. Step 12.
Pictured: The anatomically correct model of the human brain - made of wool By Daily Mail Reporter Updated: 16:38 GMT, 15 January 2009 As complicated to create as the brain is intricate, a psychiatrist has knitted herself an exact replica of the human body's most complex organ. Taking Karen Norberg almost a year to knit, the 1.5 scale brain is colour-coded to represent the different elements and areas that make up the human mind. Knitted using 100 percent cotton yarn, the woolen brain is nine inches at its longest excluding the spinal cord that exudes from its base. Psychiatrist Karen Norberg of the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts has knitted an anatomically correct model of the human brain Ms Norberg says: 'The traditional fibre arts - including knitting and crochet - are a very flexible medium for making complex forms,' 'The process of construction was also much more similar to the actual growth of a real brain than it would have been if I'd been using a material such as clay or metal. 'Then I assembled the parts together.
