Medieval Manuscripts (Free Library of Philadelphia) Our manuscript collection includes most of the kinds of books used between 1000 and 1500 A.D.: prayer books and poetry, Bibles and political propaganda, philosophical works, and fantastic histories. Some manuscripts are elaborate and beautiful works of art; others are humble "owner-produced" books, copied out from a borrowed copy by someone who needed a particular text. Each one tells us something about a long-vanished age. The Free Library’s digital manuscript collection includes two different sorts of objects: complete manuscript books, or “codices,” and separate leaves and cuttings—fragments separated from their original contexts. With the images you will find basic information about the object pictured: when and where it was made, and what its imagery depicts. When the image is from an intact book, the accompanying information will tell you about the book, and will also link to a complete description of it.

Manuscript Facsimiles (University of Notre-Dame) Medieval Manuscripts in Facsimile Based on an exhibit prepared by Dr. Marina Smyth, Librarian of the Medieval Institute with the assistance of Catherine Kavanagh and Kathleen Tonry, graduate students in the Medieval Institute In the Exhibit Room of the Department of Special Collections, on the ground floor of the Hesburgh Library at the University of Notre Dame Summer & Fall 1997 Introduction Medieval Manuscripts Up until the end of the Middle Ages, when the art of printing first allowed a measure of mass production, books were made by hand one at a time. Not all manuscripts were as beautiful as those represented in this exhibit. Manuscripts in FacsimileArt history, as well as interest in the Middle Ages, blossomed during the nineteenth century. By focusing on facsimiles instead of the manuscripts themselves, this exhibit hopes to highlight the historical development of facsimile technology, as well as the central place of facsimiles in the study of the Middle Ages.

Bible de Maciejowski Old Testament Miniatures with Latin, Persian, and Judeo-Persian inscriptions France, Paris, 1240s The Crusader Bible, also known as the Morgan Picture Bible, the Maciejowski Bible, and the Shah ‘Abbas Bible, is not only one of the greatest medieval manuscripts in the Morgan, it also ranks as one of the incomparable achievements of French Gothic illumination. The miniatures represent one of the greatest visualizations of Old Testament events ever made. Some of the stories and their heroes are well known, but there are also accounts of less familiar Israelites who fought for the Promised Land—tales that resonate to this day. There are incredibly violent battle scenes in which the implements of war are so accurately depicted they could be replicated. And there are scenes of everyday life, love, hate, and envy, as well as adultery, rape, and murder—all set in thirteenth-century France.
