A View into a 1:1 iPad Classroom - Perspectives 50 Mobile Learning Statistics For K-12 Education [Infographic] Mobile learning is among the latest trends in education that have captured educators’ interest, and seem to hold considerable promise in terms of learning potential. What the reality of mobile learning looks like on a day-to-day basis in classrooms and homes isn’t entirely clear, which is where mobile learning statistics–actual data–can help clarify things. The following infographic from Grunwald Associates offers up 50+ such statistics gleaned from parent surveys about mobile devices in K-12 environments. It is unsurprising that only 8% of students in grades 3-5 carry a smartphone with them every day, while 28% of students in middle school do–a number that increases to 51% by high school. These numbers don’t necessarily mean that there is no potential access for students at the elementary or middle school level, only that given the existing content of modern public school classrooms, only a small portion of students actually end up taking a smartphone to school.
Our First Year as a One to One Primary Classroom In 2012, I won a contest from Best Buy Canada. The contest asked applicants to write about what they would purchase at Best Buy if they had any amount up to $20,000 to spend. Since it had long been my dream to be a 1-to-1 computer classroom, and I was intrigued by the possibilities that iPads held for young children, I chose to say that I would purchase a class set of iPads. Much to my delight, I was chosen as a winner, and I had the opportunity to go on the shopping trip of a lifetime! (This contest now appears to have disappeared.) While the initial and on-going management of 30 iPads is no mean feat, I have loved having this opportunity for my grade one students. Collaboration When I was able to put a device into the hands of every student, one of my fears was that the students might focus on the screen, the way many children do with a television or a computer. Happily, this has not at all proved to be the case for us. Oddly, this showed up in an interesting way in my classroom.
5 Reasons The iPad Will Stay The King of the Classroom The following piece is by the amazingly talented Adam Webster, Assistant Director of Learning and Teaching at a secondary school in Surrey, England. He writes for both the Edudemic Magazine and his blog ‘ Cageless Thinking ‘ (worth bookmarking). This article originally appeared on Cageless Thinking and was cross-posted with Adam’s permission. 1. It’s not a laptop The biggest and most oft-heard criticism of the iPad usually revolves around it not behaving like a desktop PC or laptop. The fact that it isn’t a laptop, to me, is its greatest attribute: The SAMR model suggests that there are 4 degrees of sophistication for using technology in education: As you can see from the diagram (created using Paper by Fifty Three) the most sophisticated levels involve ‘Transformation’. I believe that the iPad makes transformation far more possible, indeed likely, than a laptop. 2. 3. Yes, Apple devices are more expensive than most other devices. 4. 5.
The Practical Side of Using iPads in the Classroom This is my first year with iPads in my classroom. I had used the device before at home, but have to admit that even though I was excited and ready to use it in my classroom, I wasn't sure where to begin. As I have talked to teachers at different schools, I have found that I am not alone. Some teachers are excited, some are nervous and many aren't sure where to begin. So I thought I could help by talking about some simple ways that I have found to integrate the iPad into classroom routines and lessons. 1. A colleague of mine, Denise Coffin, was gushing about Evernote and how it changed her life in the classroom. I have to admit, it took some time to set up the folders so I could easily keep track of kids. 2. This might be the easiest way to get kids comfortable (and in turn become more comfortable yourself!) 3. We all have those moments when students come to us with, "I'm done! 4. This may be one of the best reasons for having an iPad in the classroom. 5.
Why (Not How) We Should Use iPads In Education Last November, Justin Reich, our co-founder at EdTechTeacher, wrote a piece on his Education Week blog, If You Meet an iPad on the Way, Smash It. The piece came out the morning of the first iPad Summit in Boston and put iPad use in schools into perspective. As Justin explained in the piece, “If the nitty-gritty details of iPad use distract us from our larger mission, then we need to smash them. If we get too lost in the “how” of iPads in classrooms, then we need to stop and ask ”why?” Why iPads is a critical question that must be addressed, and the schools that are making the decision to introduce these devices into the classroom are hopefully examining the why before the how. The ‘How’ Question Once the why question has been addressed, and once the devices are in hand, the how question needs to be solved. The Important Thing To Consider The concept Amber presented resonated with me, because it not only neatly encapsulated where many classrooms go wrong but also how to right the ship.

Thats why in this article I compiled a list of the top iPad applications for viewing and editing PDF files in no particular order. They are all pretty good at what they do so it’s up to the user to decide what app fits them best. 1. Goodreader is a useful app for PDF file viewing and editing. 2. iAnnotate PDF This app is very professional looking at first glance it has a smooth user interface with tabs at the top to organize your files similar to most internet browsers tab feature. 3.
