Who controls the world? More resources for understanding
Occupy Wall Street’s slogan “We are the 99%” had been echoing through the United States and the world for just over a month when James B. Glattfelder and his co-authors released the study “The Network of Global Corporate Control” in October 2011. The study was a scientific look at our global economy, revealing how control flows like water through pipes — some thin, some thick — between people and companies. The finding: that control of our economy is highly tightly concentrated into a small core of top players, leaving us all vulnerable to fast-spreading economic distress. James B. In today’s talk, filmed at TEDxZurich, Glattfelder reveals that the impetus of the study wasn’t at all to validate global protesters. “Ideas relating to finance, economics and politics are very often tainted by people’s personal ideologies. To hear more about how the study was conducted, watch this talk. To answer the question, “Who controls the world?” 1. Download the full list here »

The Network of Global Corporate Control The structure of the control network of transnational corporations affects global market competition and financial stability. So far, only small national samples were studied and there was no appropriate methodology to assess control globally. We present the first investigation of the architecture of the international ownership network, along with the computation of the control held by each global player. BREAKING: You Know That TED Talk You Weren't Supposed To See? Here It Is. Nick Hanauer, self-described "super-rich" entrepreneur, gave a pretty compelling TED Talk about how the middle class—not the super-rich—are the real job creators. But TED, which has released over 100 different political videos in the past, thought this one was too partisan and chose not to release it. We didn't notice any flaming partisanship in it. We normally love TED, and were surprised they didn't think this talk was TEDworthy. Under pressure from the Internets, TED finally relented and released the video. The National Journal led the initial charge pushing the controversy angle. Chris Anderson, from TED, offered this official response to the outcry and posted the talk for everyone to see. The Radical Christian Right and the War on Government - Chris Hedges The Radical Christian Right and the War on Government Posted on Oct 6, 2013 By Chris Hedges Editor’s note: Chris Hedges will speak in the Los Angeles area Oct. 13 on the myth of progress and the collapse of complex societies. There is a desire felt by tens of millions of Americans, lumped into a diffuse and fractious movement known as the Christian right, to destroy the intellectual and scientific rigor of the Enlightenment, radically diminish the role of government to create a theocratic state based on “biblical law,” and force a recalcitrant world to bend to the will of an imperial and “Christian” America. U.S. The cult of masculinity, as in all fascist movements, pervades the ideology of the Christian right. Dominionists believe they are engaged in an epic battle against the forces of Satan.

Can you be too leftwing? | Richard Seymour At the risk of making myself immediately unpopular, I don't think being too leftwing is likely to be a problem with many Guardian or Comment is free readers. You may think you're far out because you reuse shopping bags, but we'll see how you react to the expropriation of your property. How can one be "too leftwing"? Relative to what? There is a tradition of vituperation towards those to one's left, about which one has to take great care: think of the Stalinist trope about "left deviations" from the path of scientific socialism. In the light of the historical experience of "actually existing socialism", and the collapse of confidence in the scientific nature of any variety of socialism, it would be rash to go down this road. A better way to approach this is to apply an immanent standard. At a superficial level, this is a question of culture. However, the problem goes deeper than that. Part of the answer is simply that the left is weaker than it has been for some time.

Profiting from the Poor: Outsourcing Social Services Puts Most Vulnerable at Risk -- by Nick Surgey and Katie Lorenze Child sleeping on suitcase (Source: Shutterstock) In a story most in the media missed, protestors gathered under the dome at the Mississippi state capitol earlier this year to oppose a bill that would allow the state Department of Human Services (DHS) to privatize everything from child protective services to nutrition programs for the elderly. The bill, HB 1009, which later passed, started out as a way to allow the Mississippi DHS to hire private contractors to collect child support payments -- something which Mississippi had flirted with in the past, with less than impressive results. From 1995-2000, a wealthy but little known firm called Maximus, Inc. had been hired to collect overdue child support payments in Mississippi and, according to a joint legislative committee report, on average, had higher costs but collected less in payments than the state did during the same five-year period. "Outsourcing aid for people can't work.

The rise of the reader: journalism in the age of the open web | Katharine Viner I'd like to begin with a true story. I was recently conducting a job interview for a Guardian role, and I asked the interviewee, who had worked only in print journalism, how he thought he'd cope working in digital news. In reply he said, "Well, I've got a computer. I've been using computers for years." His answer was funny, but also revealing: clearly he believed that digital is just a technological development; just a new kind of word processing. I'd like to talk about what this change is doing to journalism, and the opportunities that are possible if you are truly open to the web. Information: from fixed to free-flowing The web has changed the way we organise information in a very clear way: from the boundaried, solid format of books and newspapers to something liquid and free-flowing, with limitless possibilities. A newspaper is complete. Many believe that this move from fixed to fluid is not exactly new, and instead a return to the oral cultures of much earlier eras. Commodification
