Fortunately, I had another problem which needed to be solved, and this gave me a good excuse to do a little hardware hacking! SO… Dropbox and I are breaking up. Why? The cloud is becoming unavoidable. For a while, it was great. And then it wasn’t. What happened? STILL WORSE: Dropbox RENAMES YOUR PICTURES when automatically uploaded from your camera. Eventually, I sorted all of it out – but it was a pain. Who? Would I bite the bullet and drop money on this? It’s open source, which means – if you have a computer, you can host your own file server, available anywhere you have an Internet connection. I heard about this project when they first started, but it was quite lacking. How? Naturally, my instinct was to load the code on domstyle.net - unfortunately, it requires a newer version of PHP than my hosting company has installed. Totally agree. #! #!

La découverte de GNU/Linux En 2000, j’ai découvert GNU/Linux dans une des premières revues spécialisées disponibles en librairie, il y avait peu d’accès internet chez les particuliers à cette époque et GNU/Linux était totalement inconnu du grand public. C’était une distribution Red Hat qui était vendue sur un CD-ROM avec la revue. J’ai mis une semaine à l’installer (paramétrage ardu de la souris et de l’écran dans XF86Config) mais lorsque ça a fonctionné, quelle surprise ! J’avais connu CP/M, Domain/OS d’Apollo Computer, j’utilisais encore MS-DOS et Windows 98 tout moche et là, plein de logiciels avec un superbe environnement graphique. Il y avait dans la revue une publicité pour le salon GNU/Linux à Paris. La formation et la certification LPI La certification LPI comporte 3 niveaux : LPIC-1, LPIC-2 et LPIC-3. Bien sur il existe les Google Docs et autres mais je voulais un outil simple et hebergé par mes serveurs. J’ai un peu cherché et je suis tombé sur Etherpad ! EtherPad est un éditeur de texte collaboratif en temps réel. Le système ne requiert aucune installation, ni aucune inscription, il suffit d’avoir une connexion internet et un navigateur web. Etherpad était un éditeur (de texte) en ligne permettant de travailler à plusieurs sur un document. C’est là qu’entre en scène Etherpad Lite, nettement moins gourmand, il se base sur Node.js, a moins de dépendances ésotériques que son ancêtre, et d’après les développeurs, là où un Etherpad occupait 257 Mo de RAM juste après son démarrage, Etherpad Lite n’en occupe que 16 Mo.
