Infomous What is a Long Tailed Keyword… and why do I want one? | WSI Digital Marketing Blog No the keyword “alligator” would not qualify… unless of course you sold alligators. Even then that single word is not what I am referring to. “alligator shoes” is better, but not quite the long tail I was looking for. How about “alligator shoes for women”? Now we’re heading in the right direction… Long Tail Keywords are search phrases that combine 3 or more words. Let’s take something that I am a little more familiar with: “website marketing”. Website DesignWebsite HostingWebsite portfoliosNothing to do with anythingEtc. “website marketing” is better, but still awful competitive, and not nearly as targeted as it can be. “website marketing company orange county” is about as long-tailed as you want to get. There are 4 things that I want you to take away from this article: At the end of the day, I would rather have 5% of the traffic from 300,000 searches than 0% of the traffic from 192 million searches.

Jelly -- Working together is more fun for everyone! Startup Mantra: Hire Fast, Fire Fast Editor’s Note: This is a guest post by Mark Suster (@msuster), a 2x entrepreneur, now VC at GRP Partners. Read more about Suster at his Startup Blog, BothSidesoftheTable. I have often said that what separates real entrepreneurs from pundits and bystanders is a bias towards getting things done versus over analyzing things. It’s the hardest thing to teach people who come out of big companies, out of conservative jobs. And so things operate on a CYA basis. That doesn’t work in a startup. There’s a certain cadence that you can feel when you spend time hanging any well-run startup company. The startup entrepreneur knows that they’re going to be wrong often. In my mind the sign of a great entrepreneur is the one that spots the 30% scenario quickly and adjusts but doesn’t get gun shy about rapid decision-making in the future. In fact, analysis paralysis drives me fucking bonkers. Many people find this uncomfortable. So that was a long walk into the topic of recruiting. Hire Slowly? Fire Fast?

420M People In China Have Internet Access, 99% Use Baidu For Search Baidu CEO Robin Li made a rare appearance at the Web 2.0 Summit this afternoon and revealed some interesting information on the extent of his company’s reach. “Baidu answers more search queries in China than any other search engine in any other market, including Google in the US.” This might be one of the many data points supporting why the Baidu stock has more than doubled since January, now at a market cap of 40 billion. “We have a lot of room for growth,” Li said, as 1/3 of China currently has Internet access which boils down to about 420 million people. So why Google was not as successful in China? Interestingly enough, Li himself said he thought about moving Baidu to Hong Kong a year after starting Baidu because of Chinese censorship. Li also does not regret having turned down offers in the $1.5 to $2 billion range from Google, Yahoo and Microsoft.

Start-up Advice I usually tell people that everything I learned about being an entrepreneur I learned by F’ing up at my first company. I think the sign of a good entrepreneur is the ability to spot your mistakes, correct quickly and not repeat the mistakes. I made plenty of mistakes. Below are some of the lessons I learned along the way. If there’s a link on a title below I’ve written the post, if not I plan to. The summary of each posting will be here but the full article requires you to follow the links. For now it’s mostly an outline for me to follow (in no particular order). The Future Will Be Personalized When my partners and I joined MySpace, we were lucky enough to be at the leading edge of the social revolution that changed how we use the Internet. A new groundswell is coming, transforming the web once again: the personal revolution. Information Overload Today, we live in a world where we’re constantly overwhelmed by information. The rampant proliferation of information isn’t a new phenomenon. Their Web: The Early Days of The Internet In the early days, content was created and organized by professionals. Our Web: Present Day In 2003, user-generated content hit the mainstream via sites like MySpace and YouTube, and the volume of information being created increased dramatically. “Every two days, we create as much information as we did up to 2003.” Search engines weren’t designed to effectively organize this social and real-time data. Many of you reading this are avid users of social technology. Your Web: The Future Music followed a similar evolutionary path.

Wolfram|Alpha Chemistry 101 Posted by This week the American Chemical Society (ACS) is holding its Fall 2009 National Meeting & Exposition in Washington, DC, USA. In honor of professional chemists, educators, and students, we’re celebrating chemistry this week. If you are attending the meeting and would like a personal introduction to Wolfram|Alpha or the technology behind it, drop by the Wolfram Research booth, #2101. Wolfram|Alpha contains a wealth of chemistry data, and provides you rapid computations that ensure accuracy and save time. Need to compute how many moles are in 5 grams of iron? Need some quick facts about carbon? Here is an example of how you can save time by converting properties in Wolfram|Alpha: In Wednesday’s blog post we will break down chemistry topic areas and explore how Wolfram|Alpha can help you work through specific exercises, such as identifying and comparing classes of chemical elements, calculating thermodynamics, preparing solutions, converting units, and stoichiometry.

Uncovering the DNA of successful start-ups | Geek Gestalt If you spend much time with Web entrepreneurs or investors these days, it quickly becomes clear that "pivot" is the hottest term in Silicon Valley. It signifies a young company's shifting of focus, and everyone has an opinion about whether it's something start-ups should be doing or not. The answer, it seems, is yes. That was one of the major conclusions of the initial report of the Startup Genome project, an initiative put together by a group of Silicon Valley investors that aims to identify the DNA of successful Internet start-ups and the teams and investors that build them. The project began last December as an attempt to "find a way to accelerate start-ups in a scalable way," said Bjoern Herrmann, one of the leaders of the Startup Genome project. The authors of the report acknowledge that there have been previous attempts to isolate the winning strategies of successful Web outfits, including Eric Ries' Lean Startup and Steve Blank's Customer Development project. Does it make sense?
