DIY Creativity is essential for me as an individual, spouse, mom & friend. However, with five kiddos running crazy in the house I don’t have lots of time for projects that can’t be finished during nap time. Below you will find some of the diy posts I’ve done in the past. Most are my unique ideas. A few are inspired by someone else, the tutorials will give credit where it is due. metallics Over the past months, I’ve been putting just a few finishing touches on my stepdaughter’s bedroom, and one of the last things I wanted to do for her was inject the space with a dash of big girl glam. As you know from my fixation on metallic finishes, I’ve been wanting to silver leaf something, anything, for quite some time. An inexpensive bronze Kmart lamp became the victim. I’ve had this lamp for over three years and it was just looking a little, well, plain to me. For the faint of heart, the lovers of standard lamp bases, and the devotees to dark bronze, avert your eyes, look away, look away ! Now, for those like me who adore all things shiny, feast your eyes on my latest transformation, a lamp refinished in silver leaf. This DIY Mascara will Lengthen your Eyelashes There are oodles of haircare products available. Between oils and deep-conditioners, it's really easy to keep our manes in tip top shape. But what about our eyelashes? They are technically hair as well, and although we love falsies, wouldn't it be nice if your real lashes were super long? If you want long and healthy lashes, look no further, because we've created a DIY lengthening mascara that'll do just that! What You'll Need First, wash an old mascara or nail polish container and fill with: 1/4 of the container with Castor Oil1/2 Vitamin E Oil1/4 Aloe Vera Gel Mix the concoction together as well as you can with your mascara wand. And you're done! While you wait for your own to grow, try out some of these crazy temporary lashes. Also try out some of these fun braids to match your plump new lashes.
DIY Chanel Pearl Hairpins This week’s DIY, requested by a reader, was inspired by the abundant and delightful use of pearls in Chanel‘s Spring 2012 Collection. Though I’m usually not the biggest fan of pearls, I actually fell in love with the way Karl affixed them along the back of necks and pushed oversized ones into loose updos. His modern interpretation of the underwater gem just goes to show that pearls can be worn any day, at any age! You’ll need:8mm – 12mm half drilled crystal ‘faux’ pearls20 – 22 gauge wirebobby pinswire cutterflat nose plierssuper glue Start by cutting off a 5 inch piece of wire. Put a few drops of super glue onto the tip of the folded part and insert it into the pearl. Allow it to dry completely. Continue to wrap tightly 5-6 times. Now, secure the pearl by wrapping the other side around the bottom half of the pin. Snip the wires and reinforce it with a few drops of super glue. Your pearl hairpins are finished!! Tuck a few pins into an updo or use a couple to pin back a few flyaways!
52 Weeks Project DIY Picture Tiles - You Will Never Buy a Photo Frame Again Lately I’ve been having this huge urge to decorate the house. This is big news. I do not decorate. Arguably, one of the reasons why is because I. absolutely. hate. to. buy. mass. produced. decor. (Also, I can’t ever remember if pink and purple go together or not.) Anyway, this extends to photo frames. Nope. Long story short, I discovered this method of transferring my photos cheaply, quickly, and beautifully to something uncommon and unique. Tiles. The only thing that’s not particularly crunchy about this is that it uses Modge Podge or similar (and I’m not sure what’s in Modge Podge). It’s just grainy and doesn’t dry clearly. Boo. BUT, if you can overlook that one minor issue, I think you’ll love this. And it will be glorious. Here’s how you do it. First, you need to go to Home Depot, Lowes, or something like it. (FYI, I found that Lowes prices on tiles were cheaper than Home Depot. I like the stone tiles, because they have texture. So you pick out your tiles in the sizes you want. Go go go!
