Ideas for Teaching about Gender Stereotypes – FamilyConsumerSciences.com Lately there’s been a lot of commercials and public service announcements about gender stereotypes. Any teacher wanting to incorporate this topic into their curriculum would most likely want to choose the best ideas and pull together their own version of a lesson. With that in mind, I thought it would be a good idea to pull together a variety of resources I’ve found that I thought we be great to use when teaching about this topic. However, if you have a unique way of teaching this topic or just a great activity or project, I’d love for you to share it at Kim@familyconsumersciences.com Set Write the headings “BOYS” and “GIRLS” on the board and ask students to brainstorm as many characteristics associated with being each gender as they can. Youtuber icklenellierose posts a list of stereotypes... A Simple Activity to Get Started after the Christmas Break Back to normal after the Christmas break and looking for ideas to get students back into the mood, my faithful companion The Wheel of Fortune is again unfailingly helping me to provide, with almost no effort, an engaging activity to get started: grammar and vocabulary will probably follow, but let’s start off on the right foot. So, I have in mind a warm-up activity that gets students out of their seats (have they even had time to sit down?) while animatedly sharing their experiences during their Christmas break. How to go about it: I filled the wheel with some questions from the Internet TESL JournalAfter the mandatory welcome-back salutation, I asked my students to stand up (initial sceptical look assured, so please, don’t be discouraged and insist with your sweetest voice)and occupy the space in the middle of the class or any other free space available in your classroom. Note: this is a warm-up activity, so I’ll keep it going for just about 15 minutes. Photo: Greg Lonbinsk

Stereotypes of the English Definition: A stereotype is "...a fixed, over generalised belief about a particular group or class of people.” (Cardwell, 1996). In other words stereotyping is believing that people of a certain group, race or religion all have the same characteristics when they don't. Learning from the media and talking to older people, we pick up a lot of stereotypes about other nations. Mine are fish and chips, rolling hills and sarcasm (click here for a definition of sarcasm) The most common image people have of a typical Englishman is a man wearing a bowler hat and reading the Times newspaper. "Men wearing bowler hats, a pin striped suit, a newspaper under the arm and carrying a long unopen umbrella." Bowler hats are very rarely seen in England today. When I think of the English, I think of ......... "Beer, honesty, Bulldog-type, Royal Family, Cricket, the Weather" - Dickie Bird (Famous English cricket umpire) cream teas, Big Ben, Shakespeare, pubs, beefeaters

But That’s a Girl Book! | Ed Magazine The more Joseph McIntyre, Ed.M.'10, Ed.D.'17, read to his baby daughter, the more he realized that most of the books were about boys — to the point that he began to switch the genders of main characters. “It made me wonder how things looked in children’s literature as a whole,” he says. While a student in the doctoral program, McIntyre began analyzing existing research. Previous studies found ratios of male-to-female central characters in picture books of 1.5:1 to 2:1. However, he realized these studies had treated all books in their samples equally. He was right. “That means that almost four out of every five books that kids read have male central characters,” he says. McIntyre wanted to take the study one step further and see who was actually reading what. What he found was that boys check out books with male central characters much more than girls. “Similar to how being a ‘tomboy’ is less stigmatized than being a ‘sissy,’” he says. Gaming and gender stereotypes Xiuhtezcatl Martinez Explains Why He's Fighting Climate Change In this op-ed, Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, a Colorado-based 17-year-old youth director of Earth Guardians, explains why protecting the earth is the responsibility of young people. Xiuhtezcatl is of indigenous descent and has sued the government, including a recent lawsuit in Colorado arguing that the state should require state oil and gas regulators to consider public health and the environment, and is one of many young people involved in an ongoing lawsuit against the government for failing to protect people from the effects of climate change. In addition, Xiuhtezcatl is a hip-hop artist and has toured the nation and other countries around the world to perform his music. My dad taught me that protecting the earth is a responsibility, the same way our ancestors had the responsibility to do so. Those were the teachings I grew up with. My mom was very involved in environmental activism, and I’ve been working my whole life with the Earth Guardians.
