Facebook’s Gone Rogue; It’s Time for an Open Alternative | Epice Facebook has gone rogue, drunk on founder Mark Zuckerberg’s dreams of world domination. It’s time the rest of the web ecosystem recognizes this and works to replace it with something open and distributed. Facebook used to be a place to share photos and thoughts with friends and family and maybe play a few stupid games that let you pretend you were a mafia don or a homesteader. Soon everybody — including your uncle Louie and that guy you hated from your last job — had a profile. And Facebook realized it owned the network. Then Facebook decided to turn “your” profile page into your identity online — figuring, rightly, that there’s money and power in being the place where people define themselves. So in December, with the help of newly hired Beltway privacy experts, it reneged on its privacy promises and made much of your profile information public by default. This spring Facebook took that even further. Care to write a status update to your friends? No, that’s just wrong. What?

10 Essential Social Media Tips for Ecommerce Sites Social media is impacting how we do business online in new and exciting ways. Customers are sharing more and more data about what they’re doing online and the things they like. Getting people to share your products on social networks is a great way to bring in traffic and find new customers. But ecommerce sites are stuck in a hard place because the number one goal of an ecommerce site isn’t sharing, it’s selling. Take the “King” of ecommerce sites, Amazon.com, as an example. While the sharing links are above the fold, they’re in the bottom-right corner of the screen. It’s hard to know how to promote your products and brand on social networks, without sacrificing potential sales. Basic Social Media Optimization for Ecommerce Sites 1. First things first: You need to figure out where your site visitors are sharing your products. AddThis provides data on social sharing trends which you can use to make some generalizations about social sharing right out of the gate. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.
Caterpillar Cowboy: How Facebook will win the Internet and why that scares the shit out of me (This post is a longer take on the things mentioned here and here.) Pre-condition #1: Identity Facebook, with the release of social plugins, has officially announced that they believe they are the Internet’s digital identity system*. How so? [Update: My old boss Ted reminds me that Amazon Associates widgets also assume you are logged in, to show you personalized ads. Pre-condition #2: Traffic Everyone wants traffic, and nobody has more of it than Facebook. Scary Result #1: Ad network domination Given pre-condition #2 (traffic), Facebook Like buttons are going to be everywhere. What does this mean? Scary Result #2: We know what you buy There’s been lots of talk about Facebook Credits - a Facebook created currency that allows you to buy real or virtual goods using your credit card, PayPal, etc. A Facebook credit card is different. Scary Result #3: We know where you are f8 attendees had RFID chips implanted in their badges.
HOW TO: Build a Facebook Landing Page for Your Business This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business. Facebook is known for its uniformity. You can post all sorts of content, but the actual design and layout of your profile is the same as everyone else's. But with Facebook Fan Pages and the array of apps you can plug into them, there are a few ways you can customize what people see when they land on your Page. You've probably seen custom Fan Pages like those of Best Buy and Victoria's Secret. These are often used to promote deals, call attention to new products, or simply welcome visitors with an attractive branded splash page. More business resources from Mashable:
