Six paper flowers It got into my head that I needed to make some paper flowers. I don’t know why. But I figured it wouldn’t be a big deal because the Internet is a veritable smörgåsbord of craft tutorials, and all I had to do was fire up Lappy 5000 and pick one out. About 300,000 search results later, I was no longer any more confident in my ability to make a paper flower than I was in my cat’s ability to retrieve his stupid mouse instead of staring at my hand after I throw it. There were just too many choices and although I could compare the photos, they didn’t reflect (1) how good each tutorial was, (2) how closely my flower would resemble the picture, or (3) which flowers would look nice together. Then again, I thought, if anyone is supposed to try every single one, it might as well be me. After some consideration, I decided that 300,000 might be a few too many to take on, so I narrowed it down to the six most promising and got to work. Wow, that sounded kind of racist, didn’t it? the kraft farm: Crochet it up! Hair Ties and Headbands Scrunchies are back!!! Ok maybe they're not making a comeback yet but it was still fun to give my old hair ties and headbands a quick makeover. Here's the tutorial... Materials: hair tie (the thicker the easier), crochet hook (3.5-5mm), yarn and scissors. Oh and a big embroidery/crochet needle which I apparently forgot to put in the picture. Tie a slip knot around the hair tie Hold the two strands of yarn between your fingers. The loose end strand will be incorporated into the stitches so you won't have to tuck it in later. Insert crochet hook under the hair tie and catch the two strands Pull the yarn back through the hair tie and up to form a loop next to the slip knot Yarn over Pull through the loop you made Now you have ond stitch on the hair tie Start a new stitch by inserting the hook back through the hair tie Now continue to complete a stitch just like the first stitch Continue to stitch around the entire hair tie, making sure to pack the stitches in already on the hook to form a slip stitch.

Start on the left side with the outermost color (shown here in red) and make a forward knot by creating a 4-shape over the 2nd color, loop it under and back through the opening. Now pick up the outermost color on the right side (show here in red) and make a backward knot, creating a reverse 4-shape over the 2nd color, loop it under and back through the opening. Continue knotting towards the left until the outermost strand reaches the middle. Remembering the color order is important for the first few rows but after the 3rd or 4th row, the strands will fall nicely in place.
