The Satellite Environment Plot combines satellite and ground-based data to provide an overview of the current geosynchronous satellite environment. Click on a data panel to open an updating secondary window. An updating Satellite Environment Plot window is also available. Although these data are of interest to the satellite community, they do not include all parameters and energy ranges known to be associated with satellite anomalies. Sky Show Thursday: Leonid Meteor Shower to Peak {*style:Featuring perhaps the fastest meteors of any shower, the Leonids this week may be easy to locate but hard to actually see, thanks in both cases to the moon. ( Get the scoop on last year's Leonids .) *} "The quarter-phase moon"—when the lunar disk appears half dark—"will interfere with meteor watching this year," said Ben Burress, staff astronomer at the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland, California. "But since [the moon] won't rise until after local midnight, and meteors can be seen in the earlier hours as well, there is a spell of time in the evening of the 17th when the sky will be moonless and darker, making for good conditions for viewing," Burress said. For instance, sky-watchers worldwide can try looking up at the eastern sky during the predawn hours of Friday, when the Leonids' peak will produce about 20 visible shooting stars an hour. Astronomers also expect as many as three outbursts during which there could be upward of 200 meteors an hour.

Sept-Îles Clear Sky Chart It's the astronomer's forecast. At a glance, it shows when it will be cloudy or clear for up to the next two days. It's a prediction of when Sept-Îles, QC, will have good weather for astronomical observing. The data comes from a forecast model developed by Allan Rahill of the Canadian Meteorological Center. CMC's numerical weather forecasts are unique because they are specifically designed for astronomers. So, I (Attilla Danko) wrote a script to generate the images like the one above which summarizes CMC's forecast images just for Sept-Îles and the surroundings out to about 15 Kms. There are charts for 4701 locations. Summary: In the rows labeled "sky conditions", find a column of blue blocks. Details: Read the image from left to right. The line, labeled Cloud Cover forecasts total cloud cover. CMC's text page explaining this forecast is here. The line, labeled Transparency, forecasts the transparency of the air. The line, labeled Seeing, forecasts astronomical seeing.
