Alan Watts

English writer and lecturer Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was an English writer, speaker and self-styled "philosophical entertainer",[2] known for interpreting and popularising Japanese, Chinese and Indian traditions of Buddhist, Taoist, and Hindu philosophy for a Western audience. Born in Chislehurst, England, he moved to the United States in 1938 and began Zen training in New York. Watts gained a following while working as a volunteer programmer at the KPFA radio station in Berkeley. After Watts's death, his lectures found posthumous popularity through regular broadcasts on public radio, especially in California and New York, and more recently on the internet, on sites and apps such as YouTube[5] and Spotify. Early years[edit] Buddhism[edit] By his own assessment, Watts was imaginative, headstrong, and talkative. Education[edit] Watts attended The King's School, Canterbury, in the grounds of Canterbury Cathedral. Influences and first publication[edit] Views[edit] Related:  Φιλόσοφοι 20ουPhilosophy

Paul Tillich Paul Johannes Tillich (August 20, 1886 – October 22, 1965) was a German-American Christian existentialist philosopher and Lutheran Protestant theologian who is widely regarded as one of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century.[2] Among the general public, he is best known for his works The Courage to Be (1952) and Dynamics of Faith (1957), which introduced issues of theology and modern culture to a general readership. In academic theology, he is best known for his major three-volume work Systematic Theology (1951–63) in which he developed his "method of correlation", an approach of exploring the symbols of Christian revelation as answers to the problems of human existence raised by contemporary existential philosophical analysis.[3][4] Biography[edit] Tillich was born on August 20, 1886, in the small village of Starzeddel (Starosiedle), Province of Brandenburg, which was then part of Germany. At the age of 47, Tillich moved with his family to the United States. ... ...

Neville Lancelot Goddard Barbadian writer Neville Lancelot Goddard (February 19, 1905 – October 1, 1972), generally known as Neville Goddard, was a Barbadian New Thought author and mystic who wrote on the Bible, esotericism and is considered to be one of the pioneers of the law of assumption. Early life[edit] Goddard was born in Barbados on February 19, 1905, to Joseph Nathaniel and Wilhelmina Goddard. In 1931, he began to study under an Ethiopian rabbi named Abdullah, who introduced him to Kabbalah. Career[edit] Views[edit] Goddard viewed the Bible as a parable of the human psyche as opposed to a record of historical events and it has to be interpreted as guidebook to enlightenment and personal power. Neville's thought is often considered to be akin to solipsism, nondualism and Advaita Vedanta, especially considering that he stated different times that "everyone is yourself pushed out", alluding at the fact that only God exists and everything else is an extension of said God. Ananda Coomaraswamy Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy (Tamil: ஆனந்த குமாரசுவாமி, Ānanda Kentiś Kumāraswāmī; 22 August 1877 − 9 September 1947) was a Ceylonese Tamil philosopher and metaphysician, as well as a pioneering historian and philosopher of Indian art, particularly art history and symbolism, and an early interpreter of Indian culture to the West.[1] In particular, he is described as "the groundbreaking theorist who was largely responsible for introducing ancient Indian art to the West."[2] Life[edit] By 1906, Coomaraswamy had made it his mission to educate the West about Indian art, and was back in London with a large collection of photographs, actively seeking out artists to try to influence. He knew he could not rely on Museum curators or other members of the cultural establishment – in 1908 he wrote "The main difficulty so far seems to have been that Indian art has been studied so far only by archaeologists. Whole enchilada These models are: (1) "The Whole Enchilada," the most direct and aggressive approach in which the federal government creates and enforces national standards and assessments, replacing the current 50 state-level sets of standards and tests; (2) "If You Build It, They Will Come," a voluntary version of the first model--The government would develop national standards, tests and accountability metrics, and provide incentives to states to opt into such a system. To read both volumes you'd have to be at it from arsehole to breakfast time [all the time], but of course no one would want to try and swallow the whole enchilada because it'd give you baboon butt [sore buttocks from motorcycle riding], eyes like piss-holes in the snow, and send you across the bridge to Dartmouth or East Ham [mental institutions]. Then a San Francisco investment firm that already owns 10 percent of the company's stock said it would make good on an earlier threat to try to buy the whole enchilada.

Anthroposophy Anthroposophy, a philosophy founded by Rudolf Steiner, postulates the existence of an objective, intellectually comprehensible spiritual world accessible to direct experience through inner development. More specifically, it aims to develop faculties of perceptive imagination, inspiration and intuition through cultivating a form of thinking independent of sensory experience,[1][2] and to present the results thus derived in a manner subject to rational verification. In its investigations of the spiritual world, anthroposophy aims to attain the precision and clarity attained by the natural sciences in their investigations of the physical world.[1] History[edit] The early work of the founder of anthroposophy, Rudolf Steiner, culminated in his Philosophy of Freedom (also translated as The Philosophy of Spiritual Activity and Intuitive Thinking as a Spiritual Path). By the beginning of the twentieth century, Steiner's interests turned to explicitly spiritual areas of research. Etymology[edit]

Easily Distracted | Culture, Politics, Academia and Other Shiny Objects As we arrive at the end of the penultimate season of Game of Thrones, much of the credit given to its showrunners for significant improvements to Martin’s original draft of the story has to be qualified by the revelation that when they’re not working from his rewrites, they do a terrible job. With the one exception of the “Loot Train Battle”, this season has been about as much fun as watching slides from a good friend’s vacation. Sure, there’s some pretty locations, sure there’s some gifted images here and there in the show and sure, it’s great to see our friends having a great time in an interesting place. Aaron Bady brilliantly sums up how bleakly bad the direction of this season has become. You might say: but they have to finish it up! So here we go. This is to me the most important kind of “textual poaching”, basically how fans demonstrate a kind of ghostwriting of the main text. Episodes 1-3: Arya kills the Freys. Daenerys lands at Dragonstone. Euron ambushes them. Arya returns.

Category:New religious movements A new religious movement (NRM), or alternative religious movement, is a faith-based community, or ethical, spiritual, or philosophical group originating in the modern age. NRMs may be novel in origin or they may be part of a wider religion, such as Christianity, in which case they will be distinct from pre-existing denominations. There is no one criterion or set of criteria for describing a group as a "new religious movement". Movements, groups, and organizations that are commonly described in reliable sources as new religious movements, alternative religious movements, cults, marginal religious movements, or equivalent labels should be added to this category. Some authors use World War II as the dividing line after which anything is "new", whereas others define as "new" everything after the advent of the Bahá'í Faith (mid-19th century) or even everything after Sikhism (17th century).
