In the Raw: The Strange Beauty of Plywood Previous image Next image Traditionally used as a substrate (read: a building material that goes under other things), plywood is slowly starting to come out in the open. Because the veneers that make up a sheet of plywood are created by rotating a log around its long axis to draw out long, thin layers of wood, plywood often has a beautiful grain that repeats over and over.
INNOVA Berlin Innova - Kompetenz durch Marken und Service - Einzelhandel rund um Berlin Startseite www.innova.info Suche: Hauptnavigation: LA Modern to Auction Off Ettore Sottsass Designs Architect and industrial designer Ettore Sottsass may not be a household name, but recent retrospectives at LACMA and London's Design Museum have broadened the audience for his office equipment, furniture and ceramics. One fan of his work was computer pioneer, movie producer and art collector Max Palevsky. While Sottsass' early career was spent working for clients such as Fiorucci, Esprit, the Italian furniture company Poltonova, Knoll International, Alessi and the city of Turin (designing its street furniture), it was in the early 1980s that Sottsaas founded the Memphis Group.
Factory Refab: Beautiful White, Steel & Brick Loft in Berlin Berlin may be the most undervalued urban center of contemporary Europe – cheaper than London or Paris yet more developed than Prague or Warsaw, it is a city at intersection of art and culture, East and West. Moreover, it is filled with unused and underused spaces – warehouses, factories and stations that make for amazing lofts like this one. Architect Thomas Wienands (images by Tobias Haueser) made great use of the existing structure and material character of this wide-open loft space, leaving as much of the wall and vaulted-ceiling brickwork exposed as possible – as well as massive steel columns, reinforced with I-beams and held in place by giant-sized rivets. The newly-added elements are intentionally minimal, providing a smooth contrast to the roughness of the original space. In some cases, white walls enclose rooms or serve as half-height partitions between areas.
Roof Top Loft Design in Berlin – Loft Gleimstrasse by GRAFT Loft Gleimstrasse is the transformed room of a typical 19th-century building into “unfolded cocoon for an open mind”. Most rooms like kitchen, living room and bedroom are designed with openness in mind while storage areas, beds, sofas, closets and staircases are hidden in a sculptural wall construction. The kitchen is carved of a single block and is the heart of the loft. All surfaces in the kitchen, including furniture, walls, floor and ceiling, as well as all surfaces of the core, are covered with a high quality concrete plaster.

The project was an eclectic combination of memphis inspired patterns, and 20th century artists, such as David Hockney’s ripples, Keith Haring’s comic strip squiggles and Sol leWitt’s graph paper checks. The use of scale and materials, adds to the graphic playfulness of the space. The glossy surfaces combined with graphic patterns reminds one of big ‘building blocks’ that will lead to interaction with the objects to create an accessibility to contemporary art and design.
Mine » Reveiller Yep, I’m quoting computer animated seagulls from a kid movie, so what? Staycation, the collaborative home collection by Eric Trine and Will Bryant, currently on display at Supermaker in Portland, has got me feeling the hunger. And yes, if I had one or five of these items laying around my house, I probably would feel inclined to just stay home. In Residence: Jean Pigozzi's Villa Dorane by Matthew Donaldson for Nowness Art collector, photographer and fashion designer, Jean Pigozzi’s home ‘Villa Dorane’ is a visual playground and film maker Matthew Donaldson has captured it for Nowness as part of the ‘In Residence’ series. Pigozzi’s home, which is in the ever so beautiful Cap d’Antibes, was designed in collaboration with late Italian architect and designer Ettore Sotsass, and as we focus on all things Memphis we thought it is only fitting to share with you this absolutely mind blowing home. Pigozzi inherited the home in 1953 and soon worked with Sottsass to convert it into the unbelievable home that it is today. As one of the founding members of the Memphis Group, the interior is naturally overrun with Sottsass’ bizarre and bold aesthetic – extreme colour, pattern, geometry and proportion make up every element from the architecture, interior and beyond. Watch this entertaining video which takes you into the home and mind of Jean Pigozzi.
