They work hard through early September until the Jewish holidays, which they observe for the full three weeks from Rosh Hashonah to Shemini Atzeret. Columbus Day and Thanksgiving pretty much wipe out October and November, and December is of course gone to Christmas. Their offices are open at greatest length for a couple of weeks in each of January, February and March before they shut down again for the summer, as noted, in April." --David Frum, quoting a "literary friend" in his Atlantic piece "Why Your Publisher Won't Answer Your Email." News Image of the Day: Show-offs On Tuesday, June 29, Brad Thor launched the tour for Foreign Influence (Atria), his latest thriller starring ex-Navy SEAL Scot Horvath, at Books & Greetings, Northvale, N.J., to an SRO crowd. Google Editions: What We Know (and Don’t Know) By Eric Freese, Aptara Solutions Architect Publishers are just recovering from the earth-shaking impact of the iPad release and the next tremor may already be on the way. It has been widely reported that Google will be releasing their “cloud bookstore,” known as Editions, sometime this summer with upwards of 4 million books available. Such staggering volume begs the question − what do we know about Google Editions? The answer, unfortunately, is not a heckuva lot. This article summarizes what those “in the know” are saying, what the rumor mill is spinning, and what Google, with its tight lips, has inferred. Which Books? It is assumed that initially Editions will cover only books submitted by publishers, probably launching with 400,000 to 600,000 to start, many more than Apple currently has in the entire iBookstore. Platform Google plans for the books to be read through a web browser rather than a specific reading program or device. Partners Google Editions & EPUB Cost & Price Enhanced Ebooks
Pixel Qi - Home Kindle Sales Outstrip Hard Covers Amazon announced today that its sales of e-books for its Kindle reader have passed those of hard cover books. Over the past three months, according to Amazon, it has sold 143 Kindle books for every 100 hardbacks; over the past month the ratio is 1.8:1. Unfortunately, the company did not provide overall figures for those time periods. The press release containing this information was really focused on the theme, "New $189 Price Results in Tipping Point for Growth." The Kindle also faces competition from Borders, which has its own e-readers, and of course with the iPad. If the growth rate represented is accurate, this may a good indication that the reduction of the Kindle's price from $259 to $189 a month ago helped spur sales.

Microsoft seeks patent on ebook page flip High performance access to file storage As if to dispell all doubt that innovation is alive and well in Redmond, Microsoft has filed a patent application for – wait for it – the "Virtual Page Turn". Yes, with filing number 20100175018 at the US Patent and Trademark Office, Microsoft is seeking to patent the animation of a page-flip when a user makes the appropriate gesture on an ebook's touchscreen. A page-turning gesture directed to a displayed page is recognized. And that's about it. Flick your finger to turn a page forward or backward — innovation at it's most inspired To be fair, the filing does include one breakthough we haven't yet seen in an ebook reader: the ability to turn a pile-o-pages with one gesture. Touch at page 247, drag, and end up at page 533 The patent application, which was originally filed in January 2009 but published only Thursday, may have been an outgrowth of Microsoft's work on its Courier foldable tablet, which Redmond killed this April. EPUB Straight to the Point - EPUB Format Available Now! I am so happy to announce that the EPUB version of my book about EPUB, titled EPUB Straight to the Point: Creating ebooks for the Apple iPad and other ereaders is available right now. I've created a new section of my website that gives a synopsis, an excerpt to show you what it looks like, shows the final table of contents, and lets you browse the complete index (which is live in the EPUB version), as well as buy the EPUB version of the book right away (facilitated by Kagi). I will only be selling the electronic version from my website. If you'd like to wait for the print edition—which should be in bookstores by the end of the month, you can preorder the book from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or my publisher, Peachpit Press. This is the first time I've ever sold my own books from my own website, and I'm both excited and nervous. Please let me know if you have any trouble with the Kagi site, or with my end of it, and if there's anything I can do to make the process easier.
