The 2012 Oscars and the Bechdel Test It’s been a few years since I’ve checked in with The Bechdel Test for Women in Movies so I thought it would be a good time to look in on Hollywood and see if there’s been any substantial improvement in women’s representations on the big screen. In this updated video, I go through the 2011 films nominated for Best Picture at the 84th annual Academy Awards and see how they measure up to the Bechdel Test. Keep watching because I also propose a small addendum to help clarify the spirit of the test and provide a solution on how Hollywood can fix the glaring problem that the Bechdel Test exposes. I’ll also address the question, “What about the reverse test?” Watch my original Bechdel Test for Women in Movies video. Graphic Novel Review: The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi As a kid I used to love comics. Almost anything put out by Marvel, from The Avengers to Dr. Strange, were read and re-read by myself and my older brother. We weren’t the collector types; there wasn’t a plastic sleeve to be found in our house; comics were to be read and enjoyed. Our parents were suitably appalled, that their otherwise well-read sons could devote so much time, and money, to reading comics. Around the time we stopped buying seriously, 1980, comics were just beginning to enter into the graphic novel era. Since Marvel brought out Spiderman in the early sixties, comics had begun to move away from the one-dimensional heroes of the forties and fifties. But with “serious” writers like Neil Gaiman not only adapting their work to the form, but writing directly for it, publishers, who ten years ago might have turned their noses up at the idea, have jumped on the bandwagon. The uprising in 1979 started as a popular rebellion against the tyranny of the Shah, but was corrupted. Ms.
