When you’re invited to someone’s home for dinner or a party, it is always appropriate to bring a hostess gift - the obvious choices being flowers and wine. When I’m hosting a party, while I appreciate these sort of gifts, I’ve already arranged my flowers and have selected wine to serve. So when I’m the one giving the hostess gift, I like to think about what the host would really appreciate- something she can look forward to enjoying after the party is over. Because your host has likely spent a great deal of time and energy preparing for the party, breakfast the next day is probably the last thing from her mind. Wouldn’t it be so nice for her to wake up tomorrow morning after an evening of entertaining to a special treat waiting for her in the kitchen? Fast Food Fun Cupcake Buns + Brownie Burgers + Cookie Fries = One Happy Meal! Or many… I can hardly stand how cute these little guys are. You’ve probably seen them around before. I know I have. I really decided to make these when I thought about making a meal out of them for Father’s Day, complete with sugar cookie french fries. Before I started baking, I made a template for a miniature paper box tray and french fry holder. I printed the tray template on card stock (heavier weight paper), the french fry template on vellum (semi-transparent paper) and the tissue insert on tracing paper (really thin paper from Canson Art pad). All three paper weights went through my printer fine – one sheet at a time to be safe. Cut out the shapes as shown in the picture above with scissors or a sharp blade. Now, for the baking. You know I love learning to bake new things from scratch because it’s really empowering and satisfying and it usually tastes better, too. So, I picked up several kinds. The cookies came next. . Yes.

DIY Gift: Terrarium Kit November 30th, 2012 It’s widely accepted that terrariums are awesome, which means they also make awesome gifts. It’s hard to wrap a terrarium though, so a DIY kit is the perfect solution. It would be easy to whip up a whole bunch of these kits if you need a lot of inexpensive, creative gifts. Or wouldn’t they make amazing party/wedding favors? I designed some free printable cards with planting and care instructions for you to download and include in your terrarium kit. To make your kit, first put about an inch of small stones in the bottom of a jar. Print a 3 1/2″ x 5 1/4″ terrarium instruction card on card stock, and cut it out (download printable cards here—for personal use only please). If you’re feeling ambitious you could make a few polymer clay mushrooms to include in your terrarium kit. Tie some twine or ribbon around the jar, and you’re done.

little guiding stars Since the new year has started I’ve been trying to think of ways to be more kind to my self. Especially when that nasty gremlins try to creep in and stump me. I remembered this origami star video on You Tube and had to get them involved in my plan. I thought it would be fun to make a whole bunch with kind words and “you are….” phrases inside. Mix things up! Yeehaaa… yum yum… it’s Cowboy Cookies. Or, in this case, Cowgirl Cookies. A friend introduced these to me and I love them. But why stop there. They’re smooth Ball jars made especially for crafts. But which one should I give her? Oh and note to self: Use a ruler when attaching labels next time. Luckily, the first test batch I made, worked. So, here’s the recipe: Cowgirl Cookies 1 1/3 cup all purpose flour, spooned into measuring cup & leveled1 teaspoon baking powder1 teaspoon baking soda1/4 teaspoon salt1 cup cooking oats3/4 cup m&ms3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips1/2 cup brown sugar, packed1/2 cup white sugar1/3 – 1/2 cup chopped pecans Stir all the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Add 1 slightly beaten egg1/2 cup butter (melted slightly in the microwave)1 teaspoon vanilla Mix wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Then roll the cookie dough into 1 1/2 inch balls, place on a parchment covered baking sheet and bake for about 10 minutes in a preheated 350 degree oven. Pretty and tasty.
How to cut glass I posted a picture about 1 week ago on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter of me cutting glass using just string. I got LOT’S of requests for a tutorial on how I DID THIS! So here it is. I want to warn you. It’s best to triple your yarn because it will burn longer! Soak it GOOD! I like to tie my yarn where I want my glass to “cut” then quickly pour polish remover over the string again. Get a big bowl with ice and water ready. VERY IMPORTANT! Slowly turn your bottle. Quick bread in a bottle Cool weather puts us in the mood to bake. So why not give a friend a head start? Layer the dry ingredients from step 1 (below) for this easy quick bread into a milk bottle or 1-quart mason jar. To fit, tamp each layer well (with chips and nuts on top). Then all that's left is to add the wet ingredients and bake. We used craft paper adhered with double-stick tape to cover the original milk bottle graphics and the lid.
