BitTorrent visualization in processing.js You can use the 's' and 'p' keys to add new seeds and peers to the swarm. Hitting 'r' will remove one of the seeds or peers at random, but it takes a few seconds before it activates, just like the original. This visualization originally started off at aphid.org but that site doesn't seem to be up anymore. Jeff Atwood updated it to work with more recent versions of Processing (notably the 1.0 release which is theoretically API-stable and compatible with future versions). Once I saw processing.js, I knew that I had to get this working in it. Works in pretty much any modern browser except IE (because IE doesn't have support for the <canvas> tag). Changes, if you're curious: processing.js was missing ArrayList.contains() so I implemented it processing.js didn't implement screenX() or screenY() so I had to calculate things manually with cos() and sin()

ZUMA | Housing "Sexy" Smells Different for Gay, Straight Men, Study Says May 10, 2005 A new study shows that gay men respond differently from straight men when exposed to a suspected sexual stimulus found in male sweat. When homosexual men smelled the odor of male sweat—more specifically, a chemical in the male hormone testosterone—their brains responded similarly to those of women. The findings suggest that brain activity and sexual orientation are linked. It also supports an opinion held by most scientists, that people are born—not bred—gay. "This is one more line of evidence that there's a biological substring for sexual orientation," said Dean Hamer, a geneticist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Hamer is the author of The Science of Desire: The Gay Gene and the Biology of Behavior. The study was published today in the research journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Reproductive Behavior The scientists exposed heterosexual men and women and homosexual men to chemicals found in male and female sex hormones.

"Shattering The American Dream": The US Government’s Ponzi Scheme Published in VoxEU.org by Richard Evens, Larry Kotlikoff, and Kerk Phillips, The sustainability of government finances is very much the topic of the day. But the issue poses serious questions for the future, particularly how well off today’s younger generations will be compared with their parents. This column argues that the Ponzi scheme being played by the US government amounts to "fiscal child abuse" and is close to game over. Fiscal sustainability and generational equity are two of the most pressing policy issues of our times. The standard metric of long-term fiscal imbalance is official government debt (Reinhart and Rogoff 2009). In physics, the measurement of time and distance depends on one’s frame of reference, which can be viewed as one’s language. Unfortunately, language is highly flexible. With the right labels, unsustainable fiscal policies are compatible with huge and exponentially growing reported surpluses. The timing of policy is also up for grabs. The policy is simple.

Why there is no god TONE IT DOWN | Pagesdigital CSS: Taking control of the cascade by Jason Z. of 37signals One of the best things about CSS is the cascade, itself. It can also be one of the worst things about CSS. Styles applied to an HTML element are automatically inherited by their children. Cascading is what allows web designers to set styles and keep them consistent throughout a website without repeating themselves. With a single line of CSS you can, for example, set the typeface that will be applied to every element on every page of your website: Because every element is a child of the body, those elements will inherit the font style unless that property is otherwise overridden with a more specific rule. This is how we write CSS. Within complex website designs this can begin to feel like an arms race. So what can be done? Part 1: Compiled CSS Complied CSS frameworks add shortcuts, stricter syntax and additional features like reusable code and variables to standard CSS. What we liked most about using SCSS is its most basic benefit: nesting. … compiles into this plain CSS: HTML5 Elements
