How to Make Your Own Beauty Products from Scratch

How to Make Your Own Beauty Products from Scratch
Let's keep things simple this week. When it comes to personal-care products, we are big believers in streamlining what you use—see "Eight Products You Think You Need But Don't" for a refresher—buying less in general, and getting creative. We have both always loved experimenting in our kitchens and our bathrooms, checking ingredients in products we love, isolating the main ones, and then trying them on their own. Sometimes it works: A favorite hair leave-in contained aloe, for example, so one day we tried aloe alone and found that, lo and behold, it worked just fine on its own. And sometimes it didn't. Simple body scrub Many body scrubs, even the ones that claim to be sugar- or salt-based, actually contain beads made out of polyethylene, which is environmentally deplorable (it all goes down the drain, remember)—to say nothing of the preservatives, fragrance, penetration enhancers, and sulfates that typically bulk up these products.

Denim-tie dye (floral-y) This DIY kick starts my tie dye week (another version to come) and just might be my most favorite DIY yet!! As I was perusing the latest Elle magazine, I saw an ad for Paige denim. It was for a beautiful pair of tri-colored tie dye jeans (Paige Toulouse Verdugo Skinny). I have been on a color obsession lately and had to have my hands on these. The price was a little out of reach for me, so I thought I would take a stab at it myself. Materials: - white skinny denim (I bought an inexpensive pair from Target here ) - RIT dye (denim blue, wine bordo, and petal pink) - sponge brush Steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. NOTE on Washing: I recommend setting the dye before washing.

Tutorial: Homemade Sidewalk Chalk | oh my! handmade goodness - StumbleUpon by Michelle Vackar, Modern Handmade Child One of our favorite outside activities at our home is drawing with chalk on the driveway. You can play hopscotch, four-square, and of course draw and create silly stories. My daughters and I were talking one day as we played hopscotch about how to make chalk and I thought to myself, let’s try it! It ended up being quite a lot of fun. What you will need: • Toilet paper or paper towel tubes • Scissors • Duct tape • Wax paper • Small bucket or disposable container to make the recipe • ¾ cup of warm water • 1 ½ cups Plaster of Paris • 2-3 tablespoons of tempera paint • Paper bag or a “mess mat” ** we made six tubes of chalk – we simply doubled the above recipe Step 1: If you are using paper towel tubes, cut each tube in half, so it is roughly the length of a toilet paper roll tube. Step 2: Cover one end of each tube with duct table to hold the contents within. Step 3: Cut as many pieces of wax paper as you have tubes.

shorts- floral stencil (DIY) Now that spring has officially rolled around, my love for florals is in it's prime! I've been experimenting with stencils quite often lately, so I couldn't help but make a flower printed garment for the season. The great part of this project is that you can use any stencil you'd like (leaves? I tend to mix girly and not-so-girly concepts together; the design is feminine, so I purposely found a pair of jeans that were a bit loose fitting. Keep reading to see how I made it: Supplies: - Large flower/rose stencil (I bought mine at Michael's) - Jeans - White fabric paint - Flat sponge brush - Masking tape & thin paintbrush 1) Tape the stencil onto the jeans. 2) Apply paint with the brush. Having a fairly light hand might be more ideal for this project. 3) Let dry, and repeat on random areas on the jeans. 4) Try adding flowers on the sides, overlapping the seam. 5) If you would like, take a paintbrush and draw pointed ovals - also known as leaves! Be sure to show me if you make your own version!

you knew i was going to make one. - StumbleUpon they are all over pinterest....(i still am not signed up for pinterest because i don't have time for one more thing but browsing is fun!) so we made one. i took a box of 64 crayons and took out the blacks and browns.i used another small box and doubled up on the good colors i liked and hot glued them to the top of our canvas. then we turned our blow dryer to hot on high. not long after you set the hair dryer by the crayons they get shiny and then the wax starts to melt! and it dries really quickly too. seriously. what could be happier than this?? GREAT project. loved it today is the first FULL day with ALL my kids in ALL day school.yeah...i am smiling as i type that. it's good. it's quiet. i am rockin' it. removing wallpaper.....making code for craft weekend stuff.....doing my hair....going to lunch..... it's all good. hooray for school!

heart friendship bracelets So you know the drill, Get you some friendship thread and let's make a bracelet, or two, or three. Cut 4 strands of each color. Each strand should be about 2 ft. long. Play it safe. Tie them all together and tuck them under a clipboard or tape it down. The first two rows you do will just be a traditional chevron. After you reach the middle, start the same process on the right side. Your chevron is complete. Now, this part it the different part. Repeat on the right side except you will tie a forward knot with the string that is second from the right onto the string furthest to the right. Do the same on the right side with backward knots. Continue knotting onto the last string from the left side. Now, repeat that same exact row again. Now repeat all that over and over again until it's long enough. Yay! xo, Savannah + Casey

mad in crafts: DIY Fire & Ice Lanterns - StumbleUpon The old becomes new: A new variation on the outdoor lantern. We have had an unusually warm winter in Michigan this year, and while the temps have been nice, I have had to hold off on this project idea until we got a cold snap. We finally got some snow and cold earlier this week, so I was able to try out this fun winter project. I had pinned a product called Globe Ice Lantern Kits a few months back recognizing that I could DIY them at home. Originally priced at nearly $30 for a kit that makes 6 lanterns, I think they are very reasonable for a small batch. If you are making several (say, for a special event or to light a walkway), you can make 3 of these DIY versions for only $2 worth of supplies from the dollar store. To make DIY Fire & Ice Lanterns, you will need: a package of 3 punch balloons from the dollar store a package of 3 LED tea lights from the dollar store bowls small cylinder (shot glass, pop bottle, etc.) water freezer or below-freezing outdoor temps
