Desktop Wallpaper Project
It’s Wednesday again, which means a new wallpaper. This week’s desktop comes from the master of self-portraits and multi-colored gems, Dustin Hostetler, also known as UPSO. Dustin is one of the busiest guys out there right now running artsy magazine Faesthetic, a studio called Sans Nom with his wife Jemma, and working as the brainchild behind Threadless’ Select line of t-shirts, not to mention random art projects here and there. His design above was one of my favorites, I mean, who doesn’t love crazy colored gems falling from the sky? And let me tell you, it looks so effing rad on the iPhone, all of the bright colors on the black background is amazing. UPSO also has a show starting this Friday at Wootini in Carrboro, North Carolina, just outside of Chapel Hill. Be sure to come back next Wednesday for another rad wallpaper by another amazing artist.
Six Degrees of Wikipedia
Ever heard of the game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon? If you haven't, it works like this: Every actor gets a Kevin Bacon number. Kevin Bacon has a Kevin Bacon number of 0, actors who were in a movie with Kevin Bacon get a Kevin Bacon number of 1, actors who were in a movie with someone who has a Kevin Bacon number 1 get a 2, and so on (Everybody always gets the smallest number possible, so if you were in a film with two people, one with a 4 and one with a 6, your Kevin Bacon number would be 5). The same idea could apply to the articles Wikipedia. Several people were asking about what's known as the "diameter" of Wikipedia, that is, the distance between the two articles furthest apart (the longest shortest path if that makes any sense to you). Another question that came up was why I chose the "departure center" (the article from which it's easiest to get anywhere else), rather than the "arrival center" (the article that it's easiest to get to).
