Danielle LaPorte: white hot truth + sermons on life Amazon’s Tablet Is No Threat To Apple, It’s A Huge Threat To Google Last September, we got a tip from a source that Amazon was preparing a tablet that would run Google’s Android operating system. The source was a good one — they had also correctly called Amazon releasing their own Android app store. It took a while, but it looks like they nailed this news as well. Today, The Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon plans to release an Android-based tablet by October. Of course, this news has been rumored for much of this year. Let’s consider the information out there. Why is Amazon outsourcing the entire development? The only way this sounds like it can compete with the iPad in any way is if it’s extremely cheap. So either Amazon releases a tablet that is around the same price as the iPad — and potentially more expensive — or they sell each one at a huge loss. Maybe they are willing to do that. But even if Amazon is able to release a relatively cheap tablet this fall, the major question will remain: why would I buy this instead of an iPad?
Food Photography Made Easy — Simple Tricks and Pro Tips from The 4-Hour Chef A great pic from Christopher Michel of Central Kitchen in San Francisco. The red box indicates how we cropped for pg. 15 of The 4-Hour Chef. Christopher Michel has taken pictures from outer space. Best known as founder of Affinity Labs, Chris has one of the most unbelievable bios I’ve ever seen. But what camera to get? Based on my scattered research, it seemed that I needed an expensive Frankenstein’s monster of high-grade gear. The gear was no longer my bottleneck. Chef Marco Canora serving up red snapper at the wonderful Hearth in NYC. And this combo! A – Parmesan and white chocolate macaron at Saison, complete with gold leaf. B – Same shot… but much more beautiful. Roughly 20% of the 1,000+ photos in The 4-Hour Chef were taken by me using the aforementioned gear. That’s more than enough to get started and kick ass. But there’s more fun to be had, naturally. There’s An App For That What if you don’t want to lug a “real” camera to every meal? No longer. Snapseed (iTunes link) ProHDR Only
Beautiful web-based timeline software Lytro: New Camera Lets You Focus Photos After You Take Them (PICTURES) A new camera promises to radically change the way you take photos. Lytro, a Silicon Valley startup, has produced a camera that lets you focus a picture after you take it--over and over again. The camera relies on innovative new technologies that use light fields to create photographs that are manipulable post-shot. A light field is all the light traveling in every direction in through every part of space present in a scene. Using a light field sensor, the Lytro camera can capture the color, intensity and direction of the light in a photo. Imagine a photo where you've accidentally blurred out the people and instead highlighted a row of flowers behind their heads. The photos can also be viewed in 3D, and unlike conventional cameras, will be much speedier, since users won't have to wait for the autofocus to work before snapping the shot. Though Lytro hasn't yet released any price on the phone, or the date when it will be available, it's made for consumers rather than professionals.
