Year In Review: The 11 Best Short Films of 2011 Over the course of the year, curating the Short Film of the Day feature has given me a deep and affecting appreciation of the art form. Before, I hadn’t given much thought to the little bastards, but the truth is that they are incredibly versatile and representative of the boundaries that film can break. They can be jokes told well or human dramas driven home. They are so much more than movies with short runtimes. There’s one difficulty in judging them, though. The other (small) problem is that sometimes short films spend a long time touring festivals and otherwise being unavailable online. 11. In this sweetly dark comedy from writer/director Bradley Jackson features Ralph Winston (Keir O’Donnell) as a children’s party clown who has never cried in his entire life. 10. Infographic: The 2,000 Most Important Films Of All Time If you live long enough, you get to appreciate culture’s patterns. You see that Menudo is really NSYNC is really One Direction. Eventually, society just craves an old flavor and it’s mixed anew. The History of Film is the latest archival infographic from HistoryShots. (Ed note: See a different take, Martin Scorsese’s top 85 films, here.) Before he could build the graphic, though, designer Larry Gormley had to narrow down thousands of candidates, collected over two years, to a more manageable figure. With the list in hand, Gormley began plotting. “The original feature-length movies were dramas, then came adventure/action films, then Westerns, etc. It’s a surprisingly effective visual. Tribeca Film Festival Announces 2011 Lineup: 10 Films We Can't Wait to See The 10th Tribeca Film Festival runs from April 20 to May 1 and includes 88 feature-length and 61 short films -- with online screenings for those who can't jaunt to the Big Apple for a film-fancy getaway. They've announced their narrative and documentary competition and viewpoints section. True to the spirit of New York City, Tribeca's features make up a cinematic melting pot of goodness, with films from 32 different countries, including 43 world premieres. " ...
