Year In Review: The 11 Best Short Films of 2011 Over the course of the year, curating the Short Film of the Day feature has given me a deep and affecting appreciation of the art form. Before, I hadn’t given much thought to the little bastards, but the truth is that they are incredibly versatile and representative of the boundaries that film can break. They can be jokes told well or human dramas driven home. They are so much more than movies with short runtimes. There’s one difficulty in judging them, though. The other (small) problem is that sometimes short films spend a long time touring festivals and otherwise being unavailable online. 11. In this sweetly dark comedy from writer/director Bradley Jackson features Ralph Winston (Keir O’Donnell) as a children’s party clown who has never cried in his entire life. 10. Leave it to a short film featuring a marketing mascot changed into a brain-hungry monster to teach all a little bit about humanity. 9. 8. Absurdity lives. 7. 6. Spike Jonze.
Infographic: The 2,000 Most Important Films Of All Time If you live long enough, you get to appreciate culture’s patterns. You see that Menudo is really NSYNC is really One Direction. Eventually, society just craves an old flavor and it’s mixed anew. The History of Film is the latest archival infographic from HistoryShots. (Ed note: See a different take, Martin Scorsese’s top 85 films, here.) Before he could build the graphic, though, designer Larry Gormley had to narrow down thousands of candidates, collected over two years, to a more manageable figure. With the list in hand, Gormley began plotting. “The original feature-length movies were dramas, then came adventure/action films, then Westerns, etc. It’s a surprisingly effective visual. If you’d like a print of the graphic for your own, 43”x22” posters start at $34. Buy it here.

Stop-motion Magic! “Proteigon” is an entertaining film directed by Steven Briand and starring Luca Fiore. The music is well synchronized, and it was composed by Nodey and Omar and sound design by Moritz Reich. Film stills © Steven Briand Link via Colossal The Best Movies From A-Z To say this list was difficult to compile would be a vast understatement. We set out to decide the best movie for each letter of the alphabet, and to do that, we had to make some very tough decisions. Star Wars didn’t make the cut. A: Apocalypse Now An insanely talented cast and one of the greatest war movies ever. B: Back to the Future A time-travelling DeLorean? C: City of God The fact that City of God is based on a true story, makes this film of gang warfare in Rio de Janeiro even more insane. D: The Dark Knight The best superhero movie ever made. E: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Yeah it’s a love story, but it’s one of the most original and smartest love stories ever concocted. F: Forrest Gump Only an epic movie like Forrest Gump could knock off the likes of Fight Club and Fargo. G: The Godfather: Part II The Corleone story somehow got even better in the second Godfather film. H: The Hangover Exactly why we both love and hate Las Vegas. See I-P » Pages: 1 2 3

Incredible Living Painting With Realistic Body Paint Usually, we admire that the artists can create characters vividly, while this time, we will introduce a different artist who turns living, breathing people into characters in oil painting. That is Alexa Meade. Alexa Meade is a 23-year-old artist based in Washington, DC area. She applies acrylic paint to the surfaces of people, objects, and walls in a broad brushstroke that mimics the appearance of brushwork in a painting in a technique that she innovated.
The 14 Best Martial Arts Movies Every Guy Should See Few things are as delectably enjoyable as martial arts films. You can turn most on half way through and still get glued to your couch. You coast along with the plot (as awful as it can be at times) eagerly anticipating the next fight scene. Great martial arts flicks, however, combine awesome combat with a story that actually makes it worth the down time between roundhouse kicks. Ip Man The fight scenes in Ip Man are so devastatingly awesome, you’ll want to start training in Wing Chun as soon as the credits roll. Hero For as awesome as Jet Li is, a lot of his films fall short for us. Enter the Dragon Not including any Bruce Lee movies on this list would be ridiculous. Ong-Bak Some of the kicks in Ong-Bak will leave you checking your own jaw to see if it got shattered to pieces from some sort of weird osmosis. Brotherhood of the Wolf When you think French movies, you think passionate romances, artsy flicks that go over your head, and plenty of baguettes. 13 Assassins The Man From Nowhere
The 50 Best Movies on Netflix Instant We love the convenience of streaming movies on Netflix Instant, but we don’t always love the navigating through the countless films in the service’s ever-expanding catalog to find something to watch. So we’ve compiled our list of recommended titles for you—whether you love classics, comedies, documentaries or just good ol’ fashioned kung-fu. The genres vary greatly here—and range in age from brand new to 87-years-old—but all 50 of these films come with the Paste stamp of approval. The list is up to date as of February 2013, but we’ll continue to update the list from time to time as Netflix Instant changes its offerings. 50. 49. 48. 47. 46. 45. 44. 43. 42. 41. 40. 39. 38. 37. 36. 35. 34. 33. 32. 31. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 DaysYear: 2007Director: Christian Mungui With eerily realistic performances and stunning direction, 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days combines an uncomfortably forthright discussion of abortion with long, virtuosic handheld camera takes.

The 72 best ANIME movies you need to watch before you DIE - a list by paschan-1 movies you should watch before you die - a list by Chris1660 Ten Anime Series You Should See Before You Die First off I’d just like to say a huge thank you to everyone that read my list of ten anime films you should see before you die—the response has been phenomenal—not just the number of people who read it, but also those who took the time out to get involved in the following discussion. Some people loved my selections, some people thought I was well off the mark, but it was clear that there was no way I was going to be able to avoid putting together another list, this time of TV series. It has been a far harder list to compile. Just like last time, the aim of the list is not only to present ten examples of the anime medium that showcase the art form at its greatest, but also ten examples that are accessible to those mature viewers for whom the scene is new or even completely alien. Again: The below picks are in no particular order, the term “mature” is kind of loose—seeing as at least two are really “kids” shows—and this is purely personal opinion. Cowboy Bebop (1998) - 26 episodes
