Sixty Years Of Memories For my dad's 60th birthday last week, I wanted to do something really fun. My dad and I talk a lot about the past---nostalgia runs in our blood, I think---and we both love to reminisce. Inspired by Jordan Ferney's Postcard Birthday Poster, I started batting around an idea: what if I could get everyone from my dad's past to contribute a memory they had of him? What if I had all those people send their memories to me, and then I put each one into an envelope---sixty total, of course---and had him open them, one by one, on his birthday? That would be a lot of memories, right? So I wrote an email. Hello everyone! Here is the list of 20 things that without my research never would have thought bring but TOTALLY needed. 1) The Disney Junior Encylopedia of Animated Characters I did a post on how to make a great autograph book. 2) skirt/pant hanger – re purpose plastic ones from old navy or Wal-Mart and use them to hang bathing suits and towels to dry. 3) Moleskin – everyone want pretty new shoes for vacation right? 4) Scissors!! 5) Pins for trading – my Daughters favourite thing to do was trade pins. 6) Ponchos – you can pick up cheap ponchos at the dollar store. 7) Glowsticks – we also pick up glowstick from the dollar store. General Fiction Books May Not Fit A Particular Genre, But Are Still A Great Read Sometimes I get stuck in a genre rut. So I improve my fiction writing skills by reading general fiction books, too (also known as mainstream). What's the difference? I think most people assume there's genre fiction and "regular" fiction. But my feeling is that we call some books "general" because they don't fit neatly into any fiction genres we've defined. That doesn't mean they don't incorporate one or more of the traits a particular genre is known for, it just means they contain an amalgam of traits from several genres. A Humorous Chick-Lit-Thriller, Anyone? When you "google" general fiction books, what you'll find is book lists, and links to book lists. When I searched I found lists from Yahoo, Amazon, Macmillan, Penguin and more. So, searching for this type of book will yield the full gamut of stories, as long as they don't fall neatly into another genre. I Wanna Write Those Read them, absorb them, and see if the looser boundaries suit you better than the restrictions of genre fiction.
