Young Artist Takes Surreal Self-Portraits to Express Emotions
The mind can create all kinds of strange scenarios when we are asleep. In this series entitled Surreal-ity, photographer Kylie Woon brings those mind-bending stories and dreamy scenes to life. Conveying all kinds of dramatic emotions, including loss, fear, anger, and restlessness, Woon creates self-portraits where she floats, flips, and flies across each frame in seemingly impossible arrangements. The artist says her life has always flip-flopped between being obsessed with the small things in life versus being able to see the bigger, grander picture. She compares her experiences to photography and the idea of being zoomed in and zoomed out. She says, "When I am zoomed in, everything in the universe is dark except for the inside of my head. Much like artist Sebastian Eriksson, Woon's passion for life, her emotional struggles, and her desire to feel all of the happy and sad emotions that come with life are evident in her work. Heartbreakingly Beautiful Portraits of Shelter Dogs I came across Traer Scott's portraits of dogs living in American shelters and was immediately taken aback by the mix of emotions I felt. Look at these dogs' faces and you'll see what I mean. The Providence, Rhode Island-based photographer shoots up-close black and white portraits of shelter dogs, some of which found good homes while others were eventually euthanized. "Photographer Traer Scott's endearing portraits of dogs living in American shelters are irresistible and heart-rending - and make a passionate appeal to dog lovers everywhere. The portraits reveal the strikingly intense emotion, dignity and, sometimes, humour and whimsy that Scott saw in each face despite the dog's circumstances.

The Curious World of Children Bodybuilders My Modern Metropolis The Curious World of Children Bodybuilders This digitally altered photo series titled Bodybuilder's World by Belgian photographer Kurt Stallaert takes a look at a rarely imagined world filled with people, young and old, who have clearly spent every waking moment pumping iron. While it may seem strange for every single person to be so ripped, it's definitely the fully developed and extremely fit figures attached to wholesome children that warrants a double-take.

The Fine Art of Dogs (15 photos) British photographer Tim Flach sees animals in a completely different way. Having completed postgraduate studies at St. Martins School of Art London, Flach shoots stylized animal portraits that look more like fine art than framed shots of your puppy. Commercially trained as a professional photographer for over 25 years, Flach's conceptual style has been shaped by his background not just in photography but in, curiously, painted sculptures. Flach recently released a book called Dogs that's definitely worth a look. As the stunning follow-up to the critically acclaimed Equus, Flach "delves deep into the psyche of this enduring bond with Canis familiaris to present an exquisite study of “man’s best friend.”

Observing Generation Gaps How similar are parent and child? German photographer Frauke Theilking's photo project called "Generation" observes the similarities and differences between generations. Each photo pairs a parent and child, either a mother/daughter or father/son combo, side by side. Geeky Tech News - Cool Gadgets and Designs What you’re seeing is made entirely of LEGO. No pieces have been altered (painted or otherwise), no foreign materials were used (wood, glue, paint or otherwise) and no photo retouching aside from slight contrast and colour correction and the background. The incredible abandoned Victorian mansion above was the creation of artist Mike Doyle and it took him over 600 hours to complete. It’s spooky, haunting and all kinds of amazing. A truly innovative creation of LEGO art.

Breathtakingly Enchanted Landscapes Radiate with Color My Modern Metropolis Breathtakingly Enchanted Landscapes Radiate with Color Chinese-American painter Ken Hong Leung, often referred to simply as H. Beautifully Offbeat Photography (13 photos) Samuel Bradley's photos cannot be neatly categorized. Wonderfully offbeat and somewhat quirky, they truly span the spectrum. As he tells us, "I'm battling with two different ways of working and I don't know which one I prefer. I think most people follow my work and blog for the more quirky, interestingly processed and sometimes a bit 'cliché vintage' photographs. They're accessible to a wider audience, they don't require a lot of explanation and invite people to make their own assumptions and construct their own meanings." He continues, "Then there's the other side of my work that I think I've only really just begun to explore.

Visually Blending a Century of San Francisco History Shawn Clover merges the past and the present in this series of photographs, entitled 1906 + 2010: The Earthquake Blend. After selecting historical photographs in advance as a foundation for his new photographs, Clover then trekked around town and captured the city of San Francisco as it appears in modern times. He found exact locations in order to recreate the historic photos through a modern day lens. He says, "My goal is to stand in the exact spot where the original photographer stood.

Sweet and Sexually Charged Photography (20 photos) Originally from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Carlos Nunez is an LA-based photographer whose gorgeous shots can easily range from sweet and demure to downright sexy. You can tell that he has that rare ability to put his models at ease, making them feel free to express themselves and show us a side to them few people ever get to see. Take a look at Nunez's blog and you'll see shots we can't necessarily feature here on My Modern Met (in other words, NSFW). Sexually charged, the photos are a tribute to the empowered woman and her willingness to be unabashedly free. I was able to get in touch with the elusive Nunez to ask him a few questions.

A Satirical Look at the Controversial Art of Painting Cats Author Burton Silver and illustrator Heather Busch have collaborated on an art book titled Why Paint Cats: The Ethics of Feline Aesthetics that has been received in varying degrees of praise and disgust. What many don't realize is that it is categorically a humor book that essentially pokes lighthearted fun at the art industry and our societal obsession with cats. Naturally, images from the book have made their way online, igniting some controversy. After all, what would the internet be without cats and anonymous debating? Each of the furry feline companions depicted in the book are said to be unharmed, having only undergone a Photoshop treatment. However, it's understandable for the public to have thought otherwise or to remain skeptical of the claims because of the convincing color manipulation in each frame.
