At Brad Pitt's Bidding, Frank Gehry Conjures a Pastel Duplex in New Orleans's 9th Ward Frank Gehry's architectural style, with all the fragmentation and glare of its facades, might seem to be out of place on a residential street and better suited for, say, a Disney Concert Hall. Yet, as one of the 21 architects Brad Pitt enlisted for his Make it Right Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to displaced residents of post-Katrina New Orleans, he's shown that with a little toning down, he can building something in a family neighborhood and feel right at home. A duplex of Gehry's design was just completed in the Lower 9th Ward, the area hit hardest by the devastating 2005 storm, absent of the deconstructivist flourishes that normally characterize his work. "I wanted to make a house that I would like to live in and one that responded to the history, vernacular and climate of New Orleans," said Gehry in a statement. Since Make it Right's launch in 2007, the foundation has been able to build 86 homes, including ones by starchitects David Adjaye and Shigeru Ban.

Contemporary Wisconsin House Posted on September 6th, 2012 This curvaceous Wisconsin home was custom built by architect Robert Harvey Oshatz. The inside features a gorgeous spiraling hem-lock roof that “sweeps over the entry and lifts the upper floor before disappearing from plain view”. The Chenequa Residence is almost completely constructed from natural materials that Mr Oshatz sourced himself and with it’s beautiful outdoor landscape, each area of this home celebrates the resounding beauty of nature. all images sourced from archdaily

Bare stone walls in the bathroom What do you think of some rustic harshness in your bathroom? Bare stone walls work just fine with sleek concrete surfaces, creating a space that radiates an organic uniqueness I simply can't say no. Actually, it is the use of both antiquated and modern techniques that makes this style so appealing, and, taking it from photo no 3, adding a vintage piece like the large gilded mirror, a log and a few wicker baskets, or, like photo no 4, a stark, frameless mirror and inox fixtures, you can fine tune the atmosphere from total country chic to contemporary elegance. So, is bare stone something you'd opt for? BMW Showroom The BMW showroom, which also serves as delivery unit of company cars and contains both garage and training academy, constitutes the last link in a chain of buildings created for the BMW plant at Leipzig. The showroom occupies the main approach to the Zaha Hadid Architects designed Central Building, referencing adjacent structures, onsite processes and the BMW car through its dynamic shape. The building emerges naturally from trajectories established by the Central Building, forming from the surface of the car park, extending its surfaces to form two distinct building parts, pointed outwards in opposition yet seemingly rotating one around the other. With one building element the main showroom or exhibition hall is accommodated; an exposed concrete wall containing curved and rhombic passages houses workshop and academy.

LA "Bachelor Pad" The luxury housing market in Los Angeles, California is vast, and there is never any shortage of incredibly crafted contemporary homes. The team at Ben Bacal were looking to take things up a notch with the construction of this immaculate masterpiece located at 9909 Beverly Grove. At first glance, the multi-colored lighting can be mistaken for that of a plush lounge, and paired with the waterfalls, steel encased bridges, roof top deck and pool, this house is the ultimate Los Angeles bachelor pad. The property features 3 bedrooms in addition to a maids and guest house to make up the 8300 square foot floor plan. Awesome Garage House Sometimes a garage is just a garage and other times a garage is a miniature modern house just waiting to happen. In this case, it's the latter, which means I probably need to pack my bags, move back to Seattle and into this (now) house. It's not actually available, but I'm just crossing my fingers that designer Michelle de la Vega needs a few roommates (my husband, my dog, and I) in her fully functional 250 square foot space. In all seriousness though, this remodel is really incredible. For more photos of this remodel, click here. Tagged : before and after, Makeover, remodel Design Style : minimalist

paint chip calendar A few weeks ago, I saw this paint chip calendar on my friend David’s blog Cheltenham Road and knew I had to make one! It combines two things that I love…stylishness and organization. And the fact that it utilizes paint chips? Even better. I mostly followed David’s tutorial with just a few modifications. Since I planned for this calendar to hang in my office, I chose paint chips that would coordinate with the room and with the pin board that hangs on the adjacent wall. Here’s my version. materials needed: poster frame, fabric, hot glue gun, 35 paint chips, paper trimmer, corner rounder, fabric glue, foam brush 1) Purchase a poster frame (mine came from Target…$9.99). 2) Remove the edges from the frame. 3) Cover the cardboard insert with fabric using hot glue to secure it on the back, pulling tightly to keep the fabric smooth. 4) Trim the paint chips with a paper trimmer (I chose to leave the paint color names but cut off the brand). These BH&G paint chips came from Wal-Mart. Sharing here:

'Mole Man' home in Hackney sold for £1.12m 19 July 2012Last updated at 08:29 ET William Lyttle dug tunnels under his house for 40 years The home of a man who dug a labyrinth of tunnels under his property in east London over a period of 40 years has been sold for £1.12m. William Lyttle, 79, who earned the nickname Mole Man, had made tunnels up to 60ft (18.2m) long under the 20-room house in Mortimer Road, Hackney. He was evicted in 2006 and rehoused in a flat, where he died in June 2010. The house, which he inherited, went under the hammer with a guide price of £750,000, the agent for the sale said. Hackney Council discovered the network of tunnels under the house, which originally belonged to Mr Lyttle's parents, in 2006 and evicted him over safety concerns. In 2008 the High Court ordered him to pay £293,000 to Hackney Council for repairs and banned him from going near the property. Mr Lyttle was evicted in 2006 after the tunnels were discovered under the house he inherited
