Display Calibration - DisplayCalibration.com - Calibrate your computer display or monitor online for optimal viewing. Brightness, contrast, color depth, resolution and freeware software downloads. Monitor calibration tool reviews We both use and evaluate many monitor calibration and profiling instruments. This page summarizes our findings. Profiling systems are tested on a range of LCD monitors. These tend to be higher end displays, as it is both easier to evaluate profiling and calibration performance on these systems, and they are representative of monitors used by professional photographers. We included a few lower end displays as well. We group the performance of the monitor profiling sysems by the type of monitor used. Monitors types tested (as of June, 2010): High quality, wide-gamut graphics-oriented monitors, with either RGB LED or CCFL backlights. Test Methodology: The majority of the test systems ran Windows 7 x64. The screens were calibrated using hardware adjustments when possible. Any monitor evaluations are necessarily subjective. Hardware/Software tested: (Letter codes used in reviews) Results: To help highlight differences between calibration software and sensors, the following color codes are used:
Light Stalking » Transcending Travel: A Guide to Captivating Travel Photography Reviewed By Light Stalking on in Reviews For a lot of us, photography is synonymous with travel. If you’re anything like me, you actually go so far as to plan your travel itinerary around the best places and times to get out the camera. I was pretty excited then, when I heard that two friends of Light Stalking were collaborating on a guide to travel photography. Many of you will be familiar with the work of Mitchell Kanashakavich and his great guides that we have reviewed before on lighting and post production in photography. Many of you will also know of or read Darren Rowse’s great site over at Digital Photography School. Mitchell is a travel photographer by trade – he shoots for Getty Images and his photography has appeared in a heap of magazines as well as on book covers and billboards. As for the book itself, visually it’s exactly what you would expect from these guys – gorgeous, with lots of great photographs and examples. The lighting chapters of the book are also a great introduction.
Evaluating the MacBook Pro 15 inch LED-backlit display LED backlighting is touted as a breakthrough flat panel display technology, owing to its promise of a wider colour gamut, more even screen illumination, longer display life and greater power efficiency. Plus, unlike the Cold Cathode Fluorescent (CCFL) illumination found in most flat panels today, LED is mercury-free. This all sounds good, but does it translate to Apple's newest MacBook Pro 15 inch - which is the first laptop of its size to incorporate an LED backlight - being better than previous Apple laptops for the viewing and editing of pictures? First, some background. All this changed for us with the introduction of new Apple Powerbook G4 models in the spring of 2002 . Apple continued to use this display, or at least equally photo-friendly ones with the same 1280 x 854 pixel resolution, through numerous subsequent revisions of Titanium- and Aluminum-encased 15-inch Powerbook models. White point: 6000K Gamma: 2.2 White luminance: 120cd/m2 Not so with either model of MacBook Pro.
Useful Photoshop Tips And Tricks For Photo Retouching - Smashing Magazine Advertisement When it comes to designing in Photoshop, there is a myriad of ways one could use to achieve a certain result, especially when it comes to photo retouching. Designers use technique they are most confident as well as comfortable with, which is great because it’s always useful to peek into the workflow of our colleagues and learn new design approaches. We have had articles on cloning1, compositing2, masks3 and obscure Photoshop time-savers4 in the past. This article is different. I’ll be covering some of the useful techniques and tricks which I’ve learned from my experience. Here is a short overview of the techniques we’ll be covering: Naturally Increased Light The light of the sun creates texture. Increase light on a separate layer. Then use the brush tool with a soft brush, and hold the Alt/Option key to pick up colors from the area that you want to brighten. The blending mode “Color Dodge” creates realistic results. Simulate Infrared Images It’s almost like an infrared image.

Wired Cola Barcamp was awesome. Massive knowledge transfer. Half the workshops I attended were great, and I missed many more that I wanted to check out. Quick notes: Peter van Ganderen gave a great overview of the state of digital archiving today. Brent van Weringen talked about the state of mobile phones, the MVNO world, data, and where phones are going. Richard Sexton, who works at Technicolor locally, told some great stories about Dr. DB presented on memes, using the example of his icryptex meme, and had some excellent info on how the thing propagated from his referrer logs. Photocamp, a presentation by Kris Krug, Warwick Patterson, and Matt Trent was great. Todd Maffin, official blogger of the CBC, bravely faced a crowd that mostly consisted of people mad the CBC was underfunded, plus me who was mad the CBC was funded. Oh, and we've had our differences, but trust the photo: Boris Mann is evil. Look! // posted by Ryan @ 00:44 Links to this post: <a href="
Photo Camp | Raincity Studios created on Sat, 2006-08-26 15:41 Photography The Science Photo: Formula Photographic Matthew Trentacoste , Kris Krug and Warwick Patterson held a session at BarCampVancouver on anything and everything photographic that we, the session go-ers, wanted to talk about, learn, gain, explore. Matt showed us some pretty spectacular effects along with a few great resources to scope out and play with: Hand-Held Plenoptic Camera Refocusing From Light Fields Flash and No-Flash Image Pairs Microsoft Photosynth on YouTube Kris spoke about his yummy, high contrasty expired slide film/cross processing technique, one that I have really enjoyed exploring, taken directly from the KrisKrug School of Photography. Warwick let us in on his Photoshop process - should I really make it public knowledge?!! Check out their flickr pages and feel free to contact these photographic Gurus for any advice and tips through their flickr mail:
